Need help. Just replaced chain and now too much side to side slack

That chain is just plain BENT ! ! ! No other way to look at it... You could try and lay it out on the floor, and at the bent spots (especially that nasty one) try to bend them back out. I would seriously recommend just sending it back to seller for another one. Did you get it from an Ebay supplier or just a seller with one chain? If just a seller, likely why he sold it. I would be very wary of Ebay parts...

Also...are you absolutely SURE that the previous owner has the proper sprockets, and proper spacers were used?
I do notice in the front sprocket that there's a pretty large washer behind that large nut. Theres no lock washer on there. I purchased a new front sprocket from z1 and the previous owner put a newer rear sprocket on. How do I tell if the rear sprocket is the correct one? There is a part number on there though

NO!!!!!!!! 530 is not stock- you may still have the original 630 sprockets on the bike and a 530 chain is a recipe for death. You need to change the sprockets to match that chain! Don't ride it until you verify that configuration and make the changes. Seriously

The rear sprocket should also be stamped how meant teeth, and what size, ie. 630, or 530. Make sure you check both side of the sprocket, they could have put it on backwards...'83 GS 1100T

That front washer SHOULD be the locking washer.(behind the large nut)
It should be partially folded over, onto the nut, preventing it from coming loose.
To see which sprockets you have, look for inscriptions on them, it will say 530 or 630,etc.
It sounds like you have an incorrect sprocket/chain combination, or incorrect spacer issue which ****ed your chain up.
But it's also possible that you received a faulty chain, if you just threw it on and had not ridden yet.Last edited by Guest; 08-08-2012, 12:36 AM.

well heres what the front looks like. that front sprocket washer isnt crushed in at all. looks OEM too
and heres the part number
looks like it all matches up fine.
I already purchased at 13t front sprocket, so i guess i'll just replace that. is that washer supposed to be crushed inwards? i don't see it in the manual at all

The washer is supposed to be bent over opposing flats on the nut...safety reasons.
According to the JT Sprocket site, those are the correct sprockets for your bike and the correct chain, 530-114 links.
I have the same brand chain (purchased from Amazon.com), and haven't had this issue. Same brand sprockets too.1982 Suzuki GS450TZ

Don't trust the factory alignment marks, mine are off by almost a half notch. Look up chain string alignment on the internet and use that technique. After that you can gauge how far off the alignment marks are for future adjustments.

Watched both your videos, it would seem that the chain is damaged goods. I don't spend a lot on chain, nor do I get it really cheap. but side to side movement is non existent. Also once on the bike there should be no tight spots.
So without a lot of drama. I would suggest replacing it with another brand or getting a replacement from the ebay shop.

Looks like a schitty job of pressing the chain together and staking the pins when it was assembled. I wouldn't run it. You can get great deals on good chain, you just have to do some looking. Chain and sprockets are one place I won't scrimp. I have 10,000 miles or so on my Regina chain and Vortex sprockets and they are nowhere near worn out. I've only adjusted the chain two or three times in those miles.
