I used to examine tires returned from service, and never saw one like that. The center of the tread doesn't have any junctions in it that are easily susceptible to failure.
It also doesn't look as if an object scored the tread surface while the tire was rotating. The crack/slit isn't straight enough. I wouldn't want to guess at a cause without seeing the bike it was on, and cutting the tire apart. Chemical analysis of the tread rubber might also be needed.
