    Fork Seal driver?? 82 GS1100GL

    Anyone know what the diameter the forks are on a 1982 GS1100GL? Also what fork driver should I get to install fork seals on the same bike. And where can I get the tool.

    I have searched for a long time for this info and couldn't find it. Thus I am asking the knowledgeable and experienced folks on this site for help.

    Go to the hardware store. Get some PVC pipe and assortment of connectors for the correct diameter

      I believe your forks are 37mm diameter.

      Lynn is right, mostly. Get a piece of PVC that is 1 1/4" diameter and about 2 feet long. (No "assortment of connectors" needed.) Cut a slit down the entire length. 37mm is very close to 1 1/4", so the pipe would be very tight. The slit allows it to expand a little to slide right down the fork leg. Just put the seal into place, put the pipe over it, tap it into place.

        I have a big socket that is just the right OD.. I finger press the seals to the tubes and flip it over onto a board. Then I use a rubber mallet and hit down on the cap bolts to set the seals into the tubes...finish them with the big socket.

            Do you put the seal on with the upper and lower tubes together or put the seal on than insert the upper tube?

                You can do it either way..if the PVC is long enough you just slip the seal down the upper tube and drive it home and put the retainer and circlip back in. But youll most likely be taking them fully apart to remove the old seals, so just put the seal in then and reassemble the fork leg.

                  I have always put the tubes together first, then added the seal.

                  That is why the PVC needs to be about 2 feet long.

                    Home depot sell a 2' length of the right stuff in black for a couple bucks or less. Had one in the garage for years.

                      Grind or file the sharp edge off the pipe & LUBE the seal well. Don't beat the crap out of it. Easy job. Clean that circlip groove w/ a dental pick real good too
