Any upgrade kits for '78 750 to dual front disks?

My apologies if this question has already been asked. I searched the forums but found nothing. I have a '78 GS 750 w/ spokes and single disk brake in front. Also, both front and rear disks are solid, not slotted. It stops horribly when wet, especially the rear brake.

My question is this: has anyone here upgraded a similar model to dual front disks. Also, is it possible and has anyone machined either/both disks to add slots. If so, were you able to use your existing front and rear brake assemblies, or did you have to replace them?

hey, ive got a 78 as well, but my wheels are cast, so i dont know about converting your wheels to dual brakes for the front. but my were also solid, and after cleaning the rotor and new pads, it still stopped like (__!__).
ive replaced the rotors to the drilled ones from a later model (my came off a 1100) and even with the stock caliper that was an improvement. but the stock caliper doesnt fit newer disk properly, so you will have to find a set of calipers that do. maybe someone can give you more info on what caliper to use, i just cant rimember at the moment. sorry

Did you ever get your answer to this question? I am rebuilding my 1977 gs750 and also want to improve the brakes I have. I built this bike 30 years ago. Back in the day I put on spoked alloys, bought the right side fork slider, disk and caliper. now that I am looking to improve the brakes (on this restore project) that were always so bad I see that the left side caliper sits up higher on the fork slider than the one the right side and the pad does not fully engage the rotor. Long long story short I have a spare front end (dual disk off 78 w/mag wheels) so I look to see if one slider is different than the other and they are. The mounts on the right side slider sit about 1/2" lower than on the left side. I check my caliper mounting and discover that this bike had bigger diameter rotors that my 77. The forks I have from both bikes are exactly the same. The bigger disk sits perfect in the left side caliper and the smaller works perfect in the right side. They are much different disk (Thicker, bigger dia.) and I cant figure out the correct set up. I thought it should be in the caliper mounting plates so I just bought a left side caliper off ebay with a obvious different mount and if falls in the same darn spot! HELP! Does anyone know what the combo is? smaller disk and different left side caliper or slider? Or is it the bigger disk with the different caliper or slider?
