1980 GS 850GT rear spline axle reassembly

    Hi all,
I have not seen this item pictured in other posts concerning rear spline repair/assembly and I have 2 questions. I know it is some sort of sleeve that the rear axle goes through and that it came out of the cavity beyond the spline. I can't find the part in the service manual. I need direction on reinserting it(orientation, larger or smaller end first) and how to lubricate (moly or axle grease).
    Thanks,

    Hi,

If you look on page 11 of my Rear Wheel Removal guide you will see it there in the middle of the drive spline/final drive assembly. It just fits into the final drive assembly, as you said, as a spacer around the axle. I believe the small end goes toward the left side of the bike, into the final drive assembly. I'll bet it will only fit one way. (It's been a while since I've removed that part.) I think it's #5 in the fiche diagram below.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

        Thanks for the reply.
Yup, I have been reading and scanning the forums as well as your "how to"
on Rear wheel removal and did see the space in question. It just sits there! Pulled it out and it was pretty clean. Stuck it back in. Not much to it. Later, after removing, cleaning the spline assembly on the wheel side, I thought I would do the same on the spline attached to the final drive. Pulled it out to clean and didnt immediately return it to position. I think the narrower end faces the wheel.
