    Slingshot Brakes in 1979 1000

Hello all, lurker making first post. I've read the information in the stickies and searched but did not find the answer to my query. Basically I have the 1979 GS1000 which came to me sans front calipers. After debating a front end swap, I've decided to go with what is there for now and upgrade to the Slingshot brakes if its not a real pain to fit them. Any info on this particular addition to my model would be appreciated or just some search terms that might take me to said info.
    Thanks for having me.

Dont know about Slingshot brakes but Salty's brake setup works really good. All the thinking has been done already.

Slingshot brakes won't fit (or at least not without some compromises I don't want - or want to encourage anyone else - to make....).

Twinpot Kawasaki Ninja / Concourse calipers are the easy route with a Honda CBR rotor or a GS550 rotor depending on what grabs you...

EDIT 1/1/2023 - Yes I have a few sets of brackets/spacers/hub spacers left - Price is $104 shipped Priority in the USA. Most other countries tend to be around $125-$130 shipped 1st class package. Newest brackets also allow the new Ninja EX650 Tokico calipers to be fitted as well as SV650 & DL650. Just some pics of the

Thanks for the info, guys. I think this is the route I will take. Considering fabbing the inside mounts found in the thread, just scanning to see if this set up works on my model. If not, are the aluminum brackets still available for purchase? Thanks again for solving the problem for me, I appreciate that.

I probably have a set of steel left, possibly have a set of aluminum I removed from one of my bikes.

Note that if you use CBR rotors they need to be spaced out. GS550 / GS1000C rotors do not need a spacer behind them.

If the drawing is legit, I'll just make them. Any suggestions for the steel used? I'll try to go with the rotors that require no spacing as extra parts are...well, extra. I lo forward to amassing the parts, I'm not real thrilled to have to hold back because of the lack of front stoppers. I haven't really been able to open her up.

It's a GSX model, the brakes are actually Nissin brand. Sorry for being vague.

I don't know exactly what drawing you're referencing. Steel of 3/16" or greater thickness should work fine.

You need a spacer for the bottom bolt no matter what rotor you use.

My bad, I got confused with Suzuki Dons schematic. If it wouldn't offend you, I'll basically copy your design. I plan to follow the pot contours a bit closer, kind if a scalloped look, probably a little of the same on the bottom portion. Do you see any issue with removing some material from the inside? Perhaps a smallish triangle.

No issue that I can think of as long as you dont remove too much. You won't be able to make it much different from what I have there as you need a reasonable amount of material.

You need to make sure the is still enough strength to resist bending but most of the force is not in that plane in use.

Understood. I may just opt to weld a little triangular bit on top, it's just a cosmetic thing to break up the flat appearence of the plate. After reading a bit more I think I will opt for CBR rotors to save a little weight. I probably won't get to this project for a few weeks, but I'll post results. Thanks again for the guidance.

Add a hunk of steel for looks, then buy expensive rotors to save weight. OK.

Well, aren't you just an unpleasant one.

Salty, I like to make things reversible, so I'll stick to the bolt on option.
