    Tubeless tires on GS wheels?

Top of the list for my winter projects is to replace the 9th week of 1992 tires on my GS850. 3 digit date code, and last registered in 1995, so 1992 is a good guess. They are a bit hard but in remarkably good shape, no cracks. Anyway, it has tube-type tires. I have searched here and elsewhere and it seems that tire recommendations are for tubeless tires. These will replace tube type on the GS wheels with no modifications? Sorry if this has been asked a million times before, I did search a bit first...

Well, you didn't try very hard then. There are dozens of thread in the archives on this topic. Yeah, I'm a grump but geeze man.

      Click Search

      Toggle "Advanced Search"

Type "tubeless" into the search field.

      Toggle "Titles Only" limiter

      Enter and start reading.

Ran tubeless tires on a 79 GS850 with factory cast wheels for almost 30 years = zero problems or failures Mostly Continentals or IRC

Your bikes are both '82s, his is an '80.

          Not quite the same.

Bob, you might get away with running tubeless tires, but you will have to modify the rim to accept the valve stem.

Or throw a tube inside the tubeless tires. Either way works.

To sum up, you can always run tubes in tubeless tires. There is no issue and no mods need be done.
If you want to run tubeless tires without tubes, you must mill out a larger diameter flat spot on the inside of each rim so the tubeless valve stem can seat flat without leaking.

It appears that some (most?) '81 gs models had the "tubeless tire capable" cross spoke rims. I will either find the proper front rim, or switch to 82+ rims, or run a tube in the front. Better safe than sorry. Thanks for the education!

                    Then don't click on them.

As long as there are new riders that find a "new" GS bike, there will be questions about tube/tubeless, oil, tires, air/nitrogen, etc.

                    Deal with it.

Pretty sure I have a spare tubeless Suzuki star pattern front wheel in the garage. PM me if you want to discuss acquiring it.

New tubeless wheel on the way, thanks Ed...
Maybe Basscliff could add the tube\tubeless details to the Newbie greeting to avoid the outrage over the next post on this subject
