How important is the rubber covering at the lever end of the front master cylinder assmby?

Without that boot, when you depress the piston (by squeezing the lever) you're exposing a portion of the cylinder bore to the elements. Over time, moisture will make its way in there.
Another risk is something jamming itself between the piston end stop and the circlip that holds the whole mess in. In that case the piston can't fully retract, preventing the seal from resting in the right place.
If you can get your hands on one, you should definitely replace it.

Moisture yes, but moreso dirt and sand which will scratch the bore and tear up the seals. Get a new one, they're not that expensive.

Did you buy a new OEM piston and cup assembly? If so, it should have come with one and you can badger the dealer about it.
You might have some luck on eBay or in the parts wanted forum if that's the only bit you need.Comment
