What brand of seals are they? Can you post a pic or link?
On dual-sport bikes, I've seen seals that are open or have a spring on both sides, which can be pretty confusing. But the package always has instructions.
On the inside of the seal, if there are three "lips" on the seal, the side with two lips goes down, toward the oil.
If that doesn't describe what you're seeing, we'll need a good close-up.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
