    Rear wheel hop

    Is there anything that can be done to a 1982 1100e to mitigate rear wheel hop under hard braking?

    I suspect the rear shocks/springs are original. The spring preload is at maximum, but I don't know about the damping.

    I know one answer is, "Don't ride like a maniac," but I am what I am (pass the spinach).

    Front has new seals and RaceTech .90 springs. I'll probably go for new rear suspension this winter, maybe even Ohlins if I'm drunk enough when I write the check.

    I just experienced hop a few times, once pretty extreme. I never lost control, but it's embarrassing.

    oh and it occurs to me too that changing/fixing your front is going to call for action in the rear to "balance" bike.

        You know what to do...

        Start drinking. The stock rear shocks were lousy in 1982, and they're beyond horrible 32 years later...

        That said, you certainly don't have to drop a grand on Ohlins to get good rear shocks. But if you want to, go right ahead and post pics.

          Just read over that sheet, only thing I would disagree with some is getting progressive springs for the front. I got the Sonic straight rate springs and I'm like them.

          Bet my 30 year old Street Strokers are way better then your stock ones Rob lol. I replaced my stock shocks only few years after I bought the bike, that is how fast they crapped out. Installed the Street Strokers until the rubber in the eyes just wore out and couldn't find any suitable to replace them with. Progressive are on there now with the HD springs. Feels good.

          Stuff I've done to my bike:dancing: 1100E front end with new Sonic springs, 1100E swing arm conversion with new Progressive shocks installed, 530 sprockets/chain conversion, new SS brake lines, new brake pads. New SS fasteners through out. Rebuilt carbs, new EBC clutch springs and horn installed. New paint. Motor runs strong.

              Wouldn't the V&H street meg qualify as sonic rear shock already

                How times change:

                "The GS (1100e) may have a Japanese First: a set of stock shocks that don't go away with hard use. They continued to work perfectly during extended track testing, and we even have an early-season report from an endurance racer who says he hasn't bothered to change them yet because they are still working fine." Cycle World July 1982

                But I'll certainly take your advice, Brother Bluto, and start drinking heavily. Are you pre-law or pre-med?
