Brake Options for an '82 GS1100E

    Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone has swapped out the brakes on the early 80's GS1100E's? I'm looking to swap out the rotors, calipers, and the master cylinders (with everything else) for something more modern. I'd like to keep the original forks but if a total front-end swap is easier, then what front-ends are people using/possible?

    Thanks!

Unless you are willing/able to fabricate caliper relocation plates to compensate I'd go with a set of upside down forks from a later model GSX-R. Pretty much any will fit as long as you have the proper bearings. All Balls Racing sells the conversion bearings and even has a handy chart to show what you need based on your bike and selected front end.

EDIT 1/1/2023 - Yes I have a few sets of brackets/spacers/hub spacers left - Price is $104 shipped Priority in the USA. Most other countries tend to be around $125-$130 shipped 1st class package. Newest brackets also allow the new Ninja EX650 Tokico calipers to be fitted as well as SV650 & DL650. Just some pics of the

If all OP wants is better brakes (which is completely understandable, GS brakes are weak sauce at best) then this is by far the simplest way to go. I used the OEM master cylinder because mine was fine but otherwise went with salty's parts arrangement. I took it for one very brief ride around the neighbourhood last fall and am now waiting on spring to get out and enjoy vastly improved braking.

I have some brackets here if you decide to go that route. A front end swap is not an easy thing. You have to consider, steerer stops, gauge mounts, ignition mount, fork length and clearance, matching front to rear etc. (as the standard GS hub is not wide enough to be used with other forks so you have to switch to a modern wheel).

So you know I'm not feeding you a line...
