A Fork Seal Gadget that Might Actually Work ?

Took the 1100 in to have the alternator replaced a couple of days ago after the bike had set for eight months. Once we got it on the lift we noticed a puddle of fork fluid that had leaked down the side of one tube and the other was leaking a little. I hate doing fork seals and I'm not really equipped with a place to do it right now. One of the guys over on the BCCMC site recommended I try "Seal Mate " first. I googled for reviews and found there were a lot more yays than nays and several said make your own out of soft drink bottle or blister pack. In the true GSR tradition { to cheap to part with ten bucks } I made one out of the GoPro blister pack sitting on the shelf beside me. I followed the video instructions with the addition of doing it three times when the thingy slid out it was no longer black oil. Did their tests, bone dry. Went for a short ride dodging thunderheads and pulling on the front brake often to get it to work the shock. Got home and bone dry. Its a one shot tool though if you make one. Pretty thrashed after you drag it around. I'm going to make a few of them to stick in my travel tool collection. I'll report back after the seals get a better test with time..........

Does it only work for inverted forks?

Either or Rob. We'll see how it pans out after a little time passes. I would say it's a good thing to stick in your bag for travel though. Nothing to lose and who wants to deal with a seal leak 500 miles from your garage....If it holds up for a bit I'll change out the fluid and see how it is with fresh juice.

We used to use the film strips that came back with (bad)pictures that were developed. Dirt bike riders usually have something made of thin plastic to use. That's who showed me.

I was about to order the newest one until I read how many issue's it's having. The older models are glitch free but the newest one has the faster frame rates. I might wait a bit until they sort the bugs out.

Somebody else had a thread about this but it's been quite a while ago. I just happen to have a seal that is leaking, so I will give it a go.

I've used a sealmate for about ten years... some times it works some times replacing seals is the only fix. What the seal mate does is cleans the dirt out from behind the seal lip.I've had best luck by spraying contact cleaner on the tube /seal as I wiped around to flush the area. Have no idea if it will work with USD fork tubes, although I'm going to give it a go as the 'Busa now has a seal leaking on the right leg....Stay tuned

I have set the trip meter so I can see if and when it fails. In full disclosure the bike has 76,000 km on it and I don't know if the seals have ever been replaced. I would think if they the are the original 26 year old seals they will fail. 160 km so far and holding. At the very list I will be adding it to my tool kit when traveling. Might be just the thing to get a guy home.....
