adjusting the rear shocks on a 78 GS 550

I don't have a service manual, and was wondering how to adjust the rear shocks. They are in the highest position from the last owner.

    THanks

For starters a service manual can be found here http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/
Generally service manuals won't show adjustment. The owners manual would be a better place to start.
Page 95 of the 77-82 GS550 manual shows the original shock.
As a general rule the rear shocks are adjusted with a C spanner with a hook at the end that engages the stepped collar below the spring. You just turn it to change the preload.

The best adjustment you can do is replace them with some modern shocks that actually work.

True this. The difference between working shocks and failed is like night and day. The mere fact that they are jacked up to the last would suggest that they are lacking. Pushing hard down on the seat and letting it rebound will give a fair idea of how much damping is there.
It's possible that you don't have the originals. Is there a logo on them ?
