Is a gs850 shaft drive rear wheel interchangeable with the gs650gt shafty rear wheel

Is a gs850 shaft drive rear wheel interchangeable with the gs650gt shafty rear wheel. I have both wheels and as I,m waiting for my new tyres to turn up for the gs850g/t and i have a good tyre on my spare gs650gt rear wheel, I was wondering what are the chances of them being interchangeable . they look very similar .... any help would be greatly appreciated ...derk

I have both wheels at home but have never tried interchanging them. I just looked at the parts cross-reference and it appears that the '81 wheels are model-specific, but the '82 and '83 wheels fit the 650, 850 and 1100.

Not sure what is different about the '81 wheels, might be as simple as needing a different spacer for the caliper holder.

I know this doesn't answer the question you asked but a 1980 GS850 rear isn't interchangeable with an 1982 GS1100 rear.

Different disc on the later 850s - common to the 16" wheels, too; which was handy for me. The later disc has a larger diametre fixing circle, so the wheel casting is different. Supposedly 275mm diam disc for all 850s, so the caliper might still mount ok, albeit with differing spacer.

I've got an '82 650gl wheel on the rear of my '79. Had to add two 1/8th in. hardened steel washers to the outer side of the brake caliper mount. I needed a match for the '82 850 wheel i had already installed on the front. Three yrs now and no problems with it. Wider selection of tires to choose from.
