    Floating brake rotors

Can someone explain the benefit(s) of floating brake rotors?

Even thought the inner and outer are two separate parts, they look pretty solidly attached. Can they move in relation to each other?

When the disc get hot the gap between the inner and out allow the metal to expand, saving them from warping. Some racing brakes are quite loose at the rivets but dont seem to worry them.
