    GS750L 1981 - tire suggestions – I don’t ride much

    My last tires 20 (OMG!) years ago show little wear with most of it being a flat center stripe on the rear. Since it’s an L it doesn’t play nice with corners so no need for anything exotic.

    Really I’d like something good value and lower cost.

    There is a Cycle Gear shop in town and they offer mounting. I’d rather not deal with shipping and installing myself though I’m sure I could figure it out if it really made sense.     Any help and guidance appreciated. It’s a stock everything on this bike.

    I don’t see me doing more than 3k miles / year and likely closer to 1K

    1981 GS750L - Owned since 1990 when graduated high school and since have been discovering all the things not disclosed by seller.
    1983 GS750E - bought in 2016 as a rough runner to use while rebuilding 81L and then to combine with ES to make one good one
    1983 GS750ES - bought in Toronto in 2015 on a lark as a non-runner, missing front cowling and exhaust - If you have a 1983 750ES front cowling let me know! Blue would be nice

    BTW, wrapping up my divorce (congratulations accepted) so expect to be riding more (congratulations accepted) and even so I don’t see me doing more than 3k miles / year.

    Throw a set of Shinko 712's or Tour Masters on it and your good go. Order them online from Motorcycle Superstore and walk into your local shop with them under your arm. Deal with the shipping and let them install.

    What I have found locally is there is little or no selection for the sizes my bikes take. Ordering them actually will save you time and you get what you want, not just what they have on the shelf

      I agree, the Shinko 712s or 230s will do just fine. They do remarkably well for such an inexpensive tire, but the link you showed did not have the correct sizes in stock and they were rather expensive. I can get a pair of 230 Tour Masters shipped to my house for about $135. I think the sizes for your bike would be the same as mine: 100/90-19 on the front and 130/90-16 on the rear.

        my manual says

        F 90/90-19 230 $56 712 $47 (100/90-19) for the front in the 230's the closes motorcycle superstore has is 100/90/16

        R 130/90-16 230 $67 712 $65

        Total 230 $123 712 $112 (free shipping)

        I'm fine spending the extra $11 - am curious though - what am I getting for it? are the 712s just fine?

          As you can see the Shinkos are popular here over the last handful of years. I've been through 3 sets of the 230's.....well, 4 Rears and 3 fronts between 2 bikes.
          I don't love them, but I like the price. I don't know what these guys do that say they get 8000 miles on tires but mine wear out much faster.....and my Rears always wear flat down the center quickly. I also had one front 230 only 18 mos old get all cracked on the sidewall.
          Next set I will try something different.
          I think you can get some tire spoons at harbor freight. One curved and one straight seems to do the trick. Lots of lube gets them on and off much easier. Don't overlook that step. Cutting inch wide strips of a milk jug, 5 gallon bucket or laundry soap jug will protect your rinsurance from the tire spoons.
          I read various threads and watched you tube videos to learn tire changing. I don't have any particular links to share. Find what feels right to you.

            I have an L and find that it is more than capable of cornering ....

            I put on Michelin Commander II tires as I try to ride my bike as often as possible and can put on 5000 miles per year on the 850..
            I average 10,000 miles per year on my Goldwing - but the Suzi is for around town mostly...

            I did use the Shinko 230's on a 650 I had a few years ago and really liked them... cheaper tire with good grip.

              No offence, but I have an L and I don't believe you. :P

              I second the suggestion for buying cheap Shinkos and bringing them into a shop. I'm on my third season with the 230s and they work for me. They will probably charge you a lot of money since you didn't buy the tires from them. Highly recommend leaning to change them yourself if you have the time and inclination.

                I ordered the 230s. Shiuld be in thrs. Will change them on my own.

                I'll have to inquire about investigate this cornering thing. I scrape really easily if playing in the s-es.

                  You already bought tires but I have found Shinko 712's and Dunlop 404's to both be great on our bikes.

                    As far as handling goes, If you have the buckhorn bars still that's a huge strike. I have never managed to get her L down low enough to drag the exhaust and that's due to the bars. I hate them. My 850 with a 4:1 has never scraped at all and I have been pushing it further and further. I also have my center stand removed.
