No, it was not necessary. Simply tighten the nuts against each other.

For my 82 1100l I just made a T-handle with a 19mm (or 3/4) hex from an allen wrench I lopped off. About 2 feet long.

1/2" drive 19mm allen key for under $9. Looks good to me.

I just dropped a spare set of forks off at Racetech for new seals, bushings, springs, and Gold Valve cartridge Emulators. I'm thinking of having them make up a custom set of shocks.

$9.70 with Amazon Prime. That is cheap enough for me.
