GS1000 1978 rear end clunk

Hi guys, I have a 1978 GS1000 standard everything. Currently if I hit any slight bump or pot hole, there is a firm metal to metal "clunk". Are the standard shocks adjustable, and if so how do I do that'

Look in your tool kit for a C wrench. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-Motorcycl...-/291782858561
It hooks into the notches in the collar at the bottom of the shock.
If you don't have one you can use a large screwdriver and hammer and spin the collar that way. Sometimes makes a mess of the collar.
Put the bike on the centerstand to take some weight off the rear end when wrasslin' with the shocks.
Don't expect miracles with 38 year old shocks. Might be time to replace.

Clunk is probably the centre stand hitting. There is supposed to be a rubber bumper, probably rotted away by now so it hits when you hit a bump.

Im for the stand stop also. Youll see the bracket behind the pipe with a hole in it where the rubber stopper used to be. Get some contact cement and glue a few layers of old mudflap together till its about 7/16 inch thick. Cut a square out and then rubber cement that to the frame mount.
