What's the best way to fix a stripped shock stud?
One of the rear shock studs has pretty much all the threads stripped off... Didn't see this untill I removed the shock - the nut was tight, but essentially just "jammed" on.
Any suggestions how to fix this without welding on another stud? Re-thread the shank with a smaller size?'85 GS550L - SOLD

The threads don't really have much stress on them, so one size smaller should be OK, just don't cut into the shoulder portion that the shock sits on.

I bought a GS550 from a kid who only had experience working on American cars, so he forced on a pair of ASE chrome acorn bolts, WTF???
The threads were tore up, but after cleaning them with a die, they seemed to hold the torque.
Maybe you should try cleaning them with a die and see how that works.1982 GS1100G- road bike

OK, filed down the offending stud to remove the stripped threads, cut new 3/8-16 threads using the cheap die set I had from Harbor Freight, new 3/8-16 chrome acorn nut from the local hardware store & I'm back in business!!'85 GS550L - SOLD
