1978 GS 750 Fork Seal Backup Ring Missing

Went out to change fork seals on my 78 GS750 and ran into a problem or two. After a day of frustration, the seal popped out with a wood dowel (doesn't damage aluminum and allowed the metal structure to grab the dowel). Anyways, I watched many videos before attempting to change them. The videos all had a backup ring (slightly tapered washer?) and my bike did not. Checked the service manual and it appears that there is just the snap ring and the seal. Then I saw the thread before this (goggles 1980 GS550) and saw that he did have them. Do I need to source some of these? Or am I good to just put it all back together?

Not sure I can help but from dealing with mine, I know there were a lot of differences between years and models.

I suggest you check one of the online fiches for your bike to see if they list one. Here is a possible place to start.
