    suzuki gs1000st

    hi all,

im after a side shock absorber stud, as shown in photo.
it is the top stud im after that is cylindrical and finishes with a thread to hold in the top part of the rear shock absorber...
happy to buy should anyone has anything....its a pretty generic part i think, of which many 78-80 gs had.

    cheers

Its not a seperate part..its part of the Frame. If you have a machine shop close they can lathe you some and you can remove that one and weld another in its place. I am actually working with a guy I know to have some replacements machined but its gonna be a while till they get here.

didn't you just post up a 'how to' thread on one way of repairing this problem Chuck?

Yes..but Im working on getting one piece units made that all someone will need to do is cut the old one off flush with the frame, drill the hole and slide another thru the frame and plug weld it in place. Im certain mine will not fail but even I must admit it isnt very "cosmetically pleasing" with the shock off the mount.

yes chuck i appreciate it is a stud that is welded into the frame....
i was going to grind it out and replace it with something similar and re weld this in its place to take the shockie.

if you have something you're working on, id be glad to look at it....?

          thanks

Not sure exactly what Chuck is working on, but how about a bolt?

Cut/grind off the stock stud, drill a hole completely through the frame. Use a bolt with a 10mm shoulder, weld the head to the frame on the inside of the frame, weld around the bolt where it sticks out on the outside of the frame. Might have to trim off a few threads.

I have seen suggestions to simply weld on a new stud, but I feel that a through-bolt would be stronger, due to being supported in two locations.

yes steve, i agree with you...this method will be very strong....and it is the way i might have to go.
i thought i might first try and find something as close as original as i can...eg another stud from a wrecked bike, etc.
im trying to keep this 1000 st as original as possible, but in the end i might have to opt for
              the bolt / weld method.
              thanks again

Might wait to see what Chuck has up his sleeve. He is a welder, so I am sure his repair will be sound, as well.
