Front brake needs to be squeezed HARD to activate brake light...advice?

    Gents..

My "T"'s front brake lever has to be squeezed really hard to activate the brake light. A new switch is like 22 bucks shipped. An entire handle assembly with master cylinder, and new switch is under 30...or can the existing handle be repaired easily?

    Anybody got any insights?

    Peace out.

Clean and adjust the old switch.

Agree. This is a very common issue. The pieces like to fall and go running when they hit the floor so consider this your warning. Use some dielectric grease on the sliding contacts during reassembly.

What they said....the switch is on the underside of the master cylinder. One of the mentioned pieces is a spring so be careful as noted.

IMO they are a terrible design.

You can loosen the screws and slide the contact plate either way to adjust when it activates.

            Lube the switch regularly.
            Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

            Past:
            VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

I adjusted the actuator on the front handle as recommended and the light turns on immediately at the lightest touch. The cover to the actuator is cracked, with a piece broken off outside the outer screw, so a new cover is in its way. Once received I'll disassemble, clean, grease with conductive lube, and reassemble. Thx for the instructions on how to adjust.

The REAR actuator is completely not working. It appears frozen. I'm thinking that will need disassembly and possibly replacement as well. But at least the light goes on quickly with the front brake and thats the most beneficial. At least now I have brake lights and can ride the bike....or MAYBE NOT!!

The kicker is, the more I work this bike, the more problems I find. The throttle cable is cracked at the bend past the handle, so thats now on the docket. I also cause some of my own issues.( newbie learning curve) When I put the enduro bars and vintage enduro grips on the bike I needed to shave the bevel on the throttle tube/roller to make the enduro grip flush with the control casing. Well, turns out I cut a little too much bezel off that roller. Found that out when off I SNAPPED THE ENTIRE ROLLER OFF THE THROTTLE CONTROL today, doing a quick blip.

              Yea...I'm a spaz.

Any insight as to why the REAR ACTUATOR is non functional are welcome. And again you guys are lifesavers.

I replaced mine with a hydraulic switch that replaces one of the banjo bolts. Works great.

I just tried mine...turned the ignition on and squeezed and no brake light. I wonder if when my new ignition switch arrives and I install, it will work. We shall see.

may seem simple but, if you didnt...start with checking the bulb......unless the light works with the foot brake...then of course...disregard.

I pressed the rear brake as well and nothing. The light stays on when ignition switch turned ON. We shall see. It's fun discovering stuff like this on our bikes.

I'll check it...it's been sitting a while. Plus, when I did the MC rebuild, I replaced the contacts. I'll report my findings.
