Try google. There are countless links on how to read tire date codes.
My guess is 45th week of 2004. Time for a new tire.Ed

well ive decided both tyres are shot im not going to take risks with tyres off unknown age so at the moment it has a Metzeler 130/70 /17 / 62h on the back but it looks a bit big to me it seems to hang over the rim what size are other people running its a 1980 gs 850. now on the front there is a Pirelli 90/90/s19 52s again this seems tight on the front mudguard any help would be good and finally is it ok to run different makes back and front thanks again

On my 1981 GS850 I have a 130/90-17 on the rear and 100/90-19 on the front.
I personally prefer to have the same make back and front, but have seen other bikes with different makes back and front.1981 GS850G "Blue Magic" (Bike Of The Month April 2009)

I'm running the same sizes as 2BRacing. Think you'll find that is the closest or best compromise to the tyres originally fitted and most here seem to run with that.
Been running Continental TKV 11 and 12 front and back. Recently put on a ContiGo at the back. No complaints.97 R1100R
