    Shinko 777 review

    Haven't heard of anyone mentioning the Shinko 777 yet and thought I'd thrown in my 1/50 of a dollar. It's a great tire!

    Put a Shinko 777 front tire on The Mule about 2500 miles ago, maybe more, I lost count. Anyway, the Shinko 705 is on the back and due to size availability, a front isn't offered. It had a Kenda K761 dual sport on it before and with a matching rear they where OK wear wise but not real confidence inspiring on any surface.

    Yesterday in the southern front range of the Rockies I rode at 35-50 depending on the curves through ponding water covered in an inch of slush from the grape sized hail snowballs. That 777 didn't seem to mind, nor did it mind in the floods and streams I've crossed. On the road it's what you'd expect from a good tire and it handles dirt and sand as well or better than the Kenda did.

    The 705 does quite well but I'm thinking of swapping it out for a 777 when the time comes. They're about $10 more than the Shinko 230 and are made for heavy vtwin cruisers, that should cover any GS weight wise.

    I've run the 777 on front of mine. One of the best cheaper tires I've run so far. I can't find a 130/90-17 for the rear in 777 though. I switched back to the Kenda K657 because I can get a matching set front and back. They are good tires as well. But would prefer the 777 if they made a size for my rear. I ran the 705's on a Suzuki GT380 I had. While they performed well as far as ride and handling, they wore out a bit quick.

      There's a 777 front available in 120/90-17 that I'll probably be putting on the back. Got close to 8k out of the Kenda K671 rear and 10k up front. I've got about 5k on the 705, don't see it going much past 7k which is why I'm going to try the 777.

        I try to not even let them roll onto my driveway.

          Yeah, spend the extra 5 or 10 bucks a tire and go for the Shinko!

            I am rolling on Michelin Commander II right now on my '83 GS850GL

            I really like them - but they are a few more $$ and I am not sure of the sizing for your bike

              The only sizes they have that would work on a GS are the ones that you have, 100/90-19 for the front and 130/90-16 for the rear. A 450L would have a 16" rear, but I don't think the 450T does. And if it did, I don't think it would be wide enough to support a 130.

                  The stock 450t rear is 110/90-17 and there's exactly ONE tire availabile in that size!

                    A fresh 777 was spooned on the back yesterday and just like when I installed it up front, it turned my bike into a whole nother animal. At about 6k miles the front still doesn't show any wear yet although it sticks very well. Getting the dual sport off the rear has smoothed out the ride big time yet still does well on gravel. Will be riding Michigans infamous M22 later today, am expecting much more fun in the twisties!

                      Update: The 777 on the rear hadn't lasted as well as hoped, 6k miles and it's darn near bald already. The front has over 13k and looks darn near new wear wise. Granted I'm running a front tire in back and that may have something to do with the wear. They both do well enough on hard packed dirt and course gravel but not well at all when those same roads get wet. I'll probably go back to dual sport tires considering that I do quite a bit of riding in the boonies.

                        You're aware that burnouts will make a short life of rear tires, right???

                          Absolutely am, but ask anyone who's ridden with me and they'll tell you I ride like a little old lady from Pasadena! It takes too long to bounce back from doing stupid crap these days...

                              I hear ya. I'm not even old yet but I've never been one to ride very hard. I haven't broken a bone yet and I'd like to keep it that way. I do like bursts of WOT in a straight line with no traffic around to keep the carbon away, but the majority of my riding is leasurely.
