My 850GL does great on gravel, even loose. The 850G I have not had on gravel yet... it has a higher center of gravity and definitely handles differently on pavement, I'm not sure I would be as confident with it on gravel. But as noted above, general consensus is that it does okay.

    It's most certainly not a dual-sport, however.

I chose to do use a sacrificial tank and pipe & add some hand guards and engine guards. We really did gravel & a bit of sand but it kept up with the KLR & a couple of BMW's. Was heavy in the sand... We didn't drop it after all that.

Tyres are Shinko 705's not great in sand but better than a street tyre....

I just keep the speed down around 30mph
ah, well. That's a good idea ,staying on the less-used roads until you get used to it...you'll be up to speed in no time though I do remember not being happy above 45mph...any faster and you can't see the slippery bits in time to slow down, any slower and you can't get up the coulees too well. Kind of a pain when the grain trucks are doing 60+.

Looking Good, Salty Monk! That’s mostly what I have in mind. Yeah, I should probably get other tank so I don’t hate myself. Good advice.

Kochic, I like it! If I could somehow manage to pick something like that up on the cheap, I'd do the same thing. Problem is, by the time I make 'em how I want, I should probably just by a new one!

I bought the gs500 for 50$ with title, had it running in less than 30 minutes. Its a 2000 with 11000 miles on it.After getting it I saw an ad for a complete yz250 rolling chassis for 150$.I've got nothing to loose.

I think it was a 110 front & a 130 rear. I only ran that setup for a specific trip...
