Good sleuthing.
I've never taken a speedo drive apart but at this point you have nothing to loose. I'd go for it and see what you find...Ed

I've had one apart before, there really isn't much inside there that can go wrong. My guess is it's more likely to be the tab where it catches the wheel that's broken. Either way it goes you'll have it off anyhow and all it takes is slipping off a retainer ring to see what's inside and give it a fresh dab of grease.1980 Yamaha XS1100G (Current bike)

I have worked on several, managed to get a few of them working again.
In the picture shown, note that there are a couple of notches in the ring around the drive. Use snap ring pliers to unscrew that, you can then extract the drive screw. On the flat side (next to the wheel) you can remove the snap ring and remove that plate and the drive mechanism.
The gears might be worn a bit, simply requiring some position adjustment, or they might be worn enough to justify replacement.
As Nessim's signature says: "To measure is to know." (Thanks, Ed, I use that ALL the time. )

Same; I've gotten a few of these working again after someone mashed the drive tabs by reinstalling the front wheel wrong. With a bit of judicious tapping and tweaking, you can straighten the washer and tabs. However, if it's been ridden in that state it could be beyond recovery.
If the gears inside are chewed up there may not be much you can do, but they're very easy to disassemble. Might as well take a look, clean it up and grease the innards and see what happens.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Thanks all, will disassemble tomorrow and see what I see. There were Christmas decorations she said needed hanging, leftovers that needed eating, now a new Mandalorian that needs watching.Rich

So on initial teardown, clearly a clean and regrease, at least, was in order:
All the parts all cleaned up:
After re-greasing and reassembly, I could not keep the gears engaged beyond a couple of careful turns. Very close inspection of the underside of the inner tabs revealed why. Those tabs that need to engage the cutouts in the drive ring have sheared and developed a ramp that won’t let them stay in the cutouts:
So, after starting to look for the cheapest replacement on eBay, an idea hit me. The flip side of those inner tabs are still perfectly square. So I took a hammer to the tabbed washer and bent the outer tabs 180deg the other way so I could mount the tabbed washer with the good face of the inner tabs secure in their cutouts. Initial spins of the drive prove positive. I’ve remounted the wheel and am about to go for a ride. Pretty sure I’ve got it. Won’t be the first time I’ve used and hammer and anvil to fix something on my bike.Last edited by Rich82GS750TZ; 11-28-2020, 02:17 PM.Rich
