    Rob, did you squirt the soap on the sidewalls? Maybe sidewall leaks are more common than I'd thought... Always check the sidewalls.

      I think that tires can just break down and not hold air. I've seen it happen enough, where they don't hold air (well, they have super slow leaks) and you submerge them in water, but never see any air coming out. Yet the tire still looses air. There comes a time you just have to give up on it. That tire is off to tire heaven, so long live the new tire.

        Exactly! But for 3 of the 4 bikes I've ever owned, a new tube usually solves it.

          When one of the slightly oversize, rear Goodyear Eagle GTs on my '82 Z28 wouldn't hold air anymore (in 1989), the tire guy said it was probably the wheel (which showed many scars from fighting with curbs), but it might be the wheel AND the tire. I could barely make the rent back then, and buying a new wheel and tire was impossible. I was extremely bummed out.

          "Is there nothing we can do?" I asked.

          "We can put a tube in it," he said. "That'll do it?" I asked. "That'll do it," he said.

          I was overjoyed. $20 fixed a $1500 problem.

            It's amazing how much a tube can save a rim. My rims are fine, like new, no scratches, always machine mounted. The new tire is holding air great. I know that broke feeling oh so well. It's one you never forget.
