If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Me too. I really thought I'd isolated it to the carbs and that I'd find a nice nasty glob of crystallized ethanol jamming up a couple jets, or that something horrible and green would waft out into the ultrasonic bath. At the very least, I won't have to find out what mischief loose fuel...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Yes. I want to say this as politely as possible: I do appreciate all input, but in case it comes up I am not interested in playing the "did you clean the carbs? you did? you must not have done it right, do it again" game that I've seen happen in a lot of these threads, so let's head that off...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

The throttle sync before I took it apart was good, and I don't think that would have suddenly changed for the worse in the first place. You did mention the mechanical advance; I'd checked it previously and it was good. I'll give it a look next time I have the cover off. Still hoping when I get...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Alright, carbs cleaned and going back together. On the whole, very clean. The only things I've found: - Two of the little fuel filters that sit on top of the float valve seat were missing; the other two were out of position, sideways in the passage. I've removed those two for now. This seems...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

One thing before I start firing up the ultrasonic tonight or tomorrow - is it recommended to clean and/or spray the little hole in the bottom of the slide? There's a whole hell of a lot of plastic and rubber there and neither ultrasonic baths nor carb cleaner can be a good idea there. But it...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Also it's not the pilot screw, it's the idle speed adjusment screw. Hard for me to take a good picture of, but it looks like it was snapped/cut about midway of the actual screw and then welded back together. Can't imagine that impacts anything but does indicate a certain slapdash approach on the...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Good timing, I pulled the carbs and started disassembling them for cleaning today. The only thing out of the ordinary so far is that the diaphragms seemed a little eager to pop off with the caps, and all but the one on #4 seemed to come off VERY easily in one particular segment of the seal...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I mean I do feel like I've gotten pretty lucky. I've wandered around blind in the dark and in my stumblings managed to knock over enough underlying issues to turn a problem that's hard to reproduce in neutral, let alone diagnose, into what seems (in the light of day) a pretty obvious case of...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

I've had some (probably very temporary) positive, strange outcomes and I have very little clue why. This is going to be a detailed post with many things that are probably irrelevant because I have no clue what action caused what, and hope laying it all out here will let someone more experienced...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Sorry, don't believe I explained that quite right. Before new spark plugs: hard (or finicky) to start cold, a little finicky to start hot, ran and rode nicely - but didn't seem to want to get above 6 or 7k when I opened it up; not sure what throttle position that translated to. After new spark...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Redid the valve clearances (took me much longer than I want to admit) and reseated the airbox boots a tiny bit better, along with a couple other small things I'm probably forgetting. That work yielded... a refusal to rev above quarter-to-fifth-throttle. Which I'm actually counting as progress vs...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

Good news: nothing wrong with the coils, and I'm getting consistent readings on the coils. The installed caps were 10k ohm and at least one of them seemed to be dead - couldn't read any resistance/continuity over it. I installed 5k caps and am now getting a good 23k. I do think there *was* some...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

The mechanical advance was the first thing I checked when it was having trouble at 6k - it was in perfect order, which was unfortunate because I was SURE it'd be seized and I'd have found the root cause. I don't think the stock caps or recommended plugs are resistor - are you suggesting I...

1981 Suzuki GS650G - dies under load when throttled past ~1/3

My bike had trouble pulling above 6k - which was seemingly fixed for a while with new plugs - and now sputters and dies under throttle with nearly any load (it can rev to the moon in neutral, or with the clutch pulled in). Mercifully the aftermarket reg/rec and stator from the previous owner...

    Shim kits for valves?

Z1 now has 29.5mm shims back in stock after a couple months of them being out, $5.25. Chapmoto sells them in specific sizes in packs of 5 for $43 (so about $8.60 each). Just before Z1 restocked I took a punt on ordering some from this Italian place for approximately the same price as Z1.

Installed Progressive front springs on a 1980 450S? How big of a spacer did you need?

That's what I assumed re: the damping rod, thanks for confirming. I figured the Progressive instructions are referring to a small section of spring some bikes have above the damper, not the one on the damper itself. I understand I might need to finetune spacer length once the springs arrive. I...

Installed Progressive front springs on a 1980 450S? How big of a spacer did you need?

That's exactly what I'm going for to start with; on the videos I can find it seems that the stock springs are either at or just above the top of the fork tubes (i.e., where I want the new springs to be) after the caps come off. That's why I want to know the actual (unworn, unloaded) length of...

Installed Progressive front springs on a 1980 450S? How big of a spacer did you need?

I'll be ordering a pair of Progressive front fork springs (item number 11-1109) for my bike soon. The documentation I can find says you'll need to cut some PVC or similar to length to act as spacers inside the tube. I'd like to have that done before they arrive so I can make the process as fast...

1980 Suzuki GS450S - Identifying the idle mixture screw

Thanks for the confirmation. The issue you mention -- busted screws -- is actually why I wanted to play around with the idle screw before popping open the carbs - wanted to gauge likelihood of busted brass to see if I needed to hunt down OEM brass in addition to rubbers for the clean. Hanging...
