A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    vtr 1000f front end swap

37mm IIRC, definitely not 41. Looks like the GSK models from 82-84 had 41mm tubes. http://perosoft.org/yamaha/Motorcycle-fork-tube-sizes.pdf But of course, the fork spacing has to match up too.

    Suspension Advise for a 83 GS1100E

For someone riding harder, maybe. For the average everyday cruising/touring/commuting rider the 1.0s will be plenty.

    vtr 1000f front end swap

Have you considered using the VTR upper triple with riser clip-ons? Or did you want a more upright riding position?

    Suspension Advise for a 83 GS1100E

No, the springs are essentially identical.

    Suspension Advise for a 83 GS1100E

For the riding your doing, get some 1.0 springs and 10w fork oil. Another vendor option is Sonic Springs: http://sonicsprings.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=31_222&osCsid=a03rpoo9vj2fcqirbdg2r8g2n00d42g4 Full disclosure, I used to own the company. Sold it back in 2019, no current interest.

    Suspension Advise for a 83 GS1100E

See post # 3above. For the average, non-aggressive rider the biggest advantages are better emergency braking, and greater comfort. Well worth the $130, IMO.

    Suspension Advise for a 83 GS1100E

For the spring rate, I'll just need to know your weight.

    Ah, now I'm tracking. :)

    Suspension Advise for a 83 GS1100E

Agree with Rob, Just new springs and oil (10w) is all you need. The bike will handle and brake better, and also be more comfortable. If you need help selecting a spring rate just ping me. (Shame I'm not in Oklahoma City any more, I'd have been happy to help with it.)

    vtr 1000f front end swap

I guess I'm not understanding what's stopping you now? If you can sort out the steering stops, then it's just a matter of getting someone to press the stem out of the 1100 lower triple and fitting it into the VTR lower. Usually you have to machine a bushing to make that work, but that's easy...

    72 r5 part 2

Just keep the priorities straight! :) (For the record, Chuck's doing some work on my 1000S. So let's not distract him, ok?? :) )

Race Tech Rear Monoshock - Rebuild or Replace?

"Gold Valve" is just Race-Tech's name for their fork and shock valving cartridges. I'm guessing $250-300 or so for a rebuild. Money well spent.

Race Tech Rear Monoshock - Rebuild or Replace?

Those are decent shocks. Worth sending it to R-T for a rebuild. Typically on remote reservoir shocks the rebound adjustment is on the reservoir, the compression adjuster is on the shock body.

    vtr 1000f front end swap

How well do the steering stops match up?
  15. RichDesmond

    vtr 1000f front end swap

Why the mix and match? Easier to just use the whole VTR front end, no? I'd be very careful about mixing upper and lower triples from different bikes (or even different years of the same bike, or different sub models) unless I knew for a fact that the offset and fork spacing were identical.

air valve broke on front shocks

Does the valve still hold air pressure? That's important, the trapped air volume in the fork a component of the overall spring rate. If it doesn't you'll need to fix it. If it does, then just get a set of good springs in the right rate. Sonic, Race-Tech, Eibach, Traxxion...any of them will be...

    Go Fast Innovations JIS Screwdrivers

JIS screwdrivers/bits work very well on Phillips screws, much better than the reverse. I've said this before, but if you work on Japanese bikes a set of JIS screwdrivers will be the best money you'll ever spend on tools.

Opinions on DL1000 V Strom as an 850 replacement

At 30,000 it's just nicely broken in. Many DL1000s over 100k, quite a few over 200k, and at least one over 400k. I've had a DL650 since 2006, when I bought it new. Great bikes. Like almost every other bike I've had it needed a better seat (although the 1000 is marginally better than the 650 in...

Differences in GS1000l vs GS 1000ec frames comments

I'd be surprised if the "rake" of the frame was different. "Rake" in quotes because frame doesn't really have a rake, you can't measure steering head angle until the bike is on it's suspension and wheels. If the frames are identical but the "L" forks are longer, or the shocks shorter, that will...
