A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Painting Bike parts

I have decided to paint my GS650e (Stardust silver) I have watched countless videos on painting to include every aspect. Still, im quite not sure of all the steps I need to take. I found an NOS tank in the original color, so that's a big one out of the way. This is what I have planned: Plastic...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Checked the valve tappet clearances again. All were approximately the same as before with one interesting reading on intake #1. In position A (cam lobe pointing up) I had the minimum .03 mm gap, but in position B, the gap was 0.10 mm. None of the other valves had this discrepancy. Also checked...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Not wanting to leave a stone unturned, I went ahead and fabricated a fuel level tool as has been suggested several times. I'd done the basic float height adjustment and measured the fuel volume on a level surface. All carbs were within 2ml of each other. Took about 1/2 hour to drill through the...

    1980 GS450E start button internals

Should look something like this. You can get an NOS one on Ebay.

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

The learning continues.. Thanks for the gasket and purpose information. Took it out for a spin with the new gaskets and while the discoloration hasnt stopped, Its now a very light yellowish purple shade. A similar ride created deep blue/purple splotches previously. I made sure to get the pipes...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Good to know. Looks like I can go for a ride. I was basing my assumption on the image from Partzilla.

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Decided to take the exhaust off and will change out the gaskets. Noticed all the gaskets had paint on them. Those expanding foam plugs didn't do their job! Clearly, paint is not a great conductor of heat, but its present on all four and only one pipe was turning blue. Possibly a seating issue...

    GS Rectifier/Regulator replace

Hey Rich, sorry about the potentially misleading terminology. My understanding is that the shunt regulator shorts the excess voltage and thus current back through the rectifiers and stator while the series regulator will stop conducting or effectively disconnect above the maximum charging...

    GS Rectifier/Regulator replace

Could have only been enhanced if there was a more compact version. The series design with auto disconnect already is a massive improvement over OEM.

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

I did reuse the copper crush gaskets that had on for about a week when I decided to go the restoration route. They looked pretty good so I figured I could reuse them. I do have a lesser quality new set on hand. Makes a lot of sense to tighten at the head before the hanger brackets. That's how I...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Tightened up the exhaust clamp on #1. It was a bit loose and will let it go and see if the splotches stop growing. Now I'm hearing a sound almost like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle for those of you seasoned enough to remember. Only happens when I accelerate. Goes away as soon as I...

Hints for Installing carbs on a 1979 GS1000

Push the airbox all the way back, install the carbs into the engine side, then tilt up and line up/drop onto the airbox boots. I use a little lube (dielectric grease is what i had available) on the carb side, then use a heat gun to warm up the boots and work in. What used to be hell, became...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Compression 1 to 4: 165, 165, 155, 155 Actually pretty impressive. Spark plugs: All look perfect. No indication of lean running on #1.

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Maybe the blueing of exhaust #1 is trying to tell be something and not just a result of reduced chrome. Went on a 15 minute ride and it blued up again. I ripped the throttle a couple of times but never got beyond 5k or 55 mph. When I took off, it responded really well, but seemed to drop off a...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

I ended up getting an SH775 from Nessism Works great and runs cool to the touch. No room for my tool tray now, but at least the battery is charging now.

    GS Rectifier/Regulator replace

After a 15 minute ride, the battery voltage jumped up to 12.97 volts and the R/R hardly broke a sweat. Only slightly warm to the touch.

    GS Rectifier/Regulator replace

As has been typical, when I went to hook up the regulator, the negative terminal of my battery broke off. A couple of days later, with a new battery terminal and bullet connectors, I finally got everything hooked up. Fired her up and the voltage at the battery shot up from about 12.3 to 13.5...
