I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Trail Tech Cylinder Head Temp gauge

Yea I figured there's error in the sensor plus the position of the sensor will have some effect on the reading. Oil temp might be better to know if you want to compare numbers. I notice there's a round spot on the oil filter cover. That's probably a good spot for a temp sender. I'll be watching...

Trail Tech Cylinder Head Temp gauge

I just installed one of these and wanted to share my experience. For a while I wanted some gauge to show me the temp of either the engine or oil. The 550 doesn't have any place to install an oil temp sender (without tapping a hole) and it occurred to me that on an air cooled bike cylinder head...

    High idle after carb clean

I wouldn't worry too much about the idle until you've hooked up the sync tool and made some adjustments there. You can try reducing the idle to 1500 to 2000 RPM with the idle adjustment knob behind the carbs. That should get you in the ballpark so you can do the vacuum sync.

Another GS550 carb issue, stutters at 3000rpm

Generally speaking a poor idle when the bike gets up to temp indicates a rich mixture. Of course if the bike overheats you may find it difficult to start under any circumstance. You mentioned that you color-tuned the carbs but was that while the motor was up to temp? When you rebuilt the...

GS550L hard to start after sitting for a few days

For a motor to run you need three things: 1. compression 2. fuel mixture 3. spark Compression is the result of properly functioning top end: valves are sealing correctly, bores and piston rings are within spec. You can and should measure compression on a new bike to understand the state of the...

    Test valves for leakage?

I've done it with kerosene and it does find leaks. Just put it in a big pan or basin and keep it level. Gas works too but it evaporates so may not give an accurate indication. Give it time to work. I left it overnight. I then gave the seats a light lapping and repeated the test. Much better...

Need to re-synch carbs after adjusting valves?

If its smooth on idle why mess?

Hopefully I didn't strip it beyond repair

And use the torque settings. Too tight doesn't work better. Paper/fiber gaskets are designed to swell by absorbing a little oil. If you over tighten them, they crush and don't function correctly.

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

There were a few which measured .03 or .04 mm.

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

Any chance this could be a valve clearance thing? I checked the clearances and they were within spec but a few just barely. Do we know if the exhaust valves get tighter or looser as it gets hot.

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

I haven't verified spark but I did try to turn the petcock to prime. If this happens again I'll have a spare spark plug handy.

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

No smoke. I let it sit for two hours and it started right up on the first crank.

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

I think what could happen is that fuel boils in carbs and we get a bubble somewhere in the network of tubes and pipes which keeps it from spitting fuel into the airflow. At least that's my 25 cent theory.

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

I was adjusting the idle mixture.. but yea what can I say I'm slow. :)

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

Hmm. Thing is the plugs look fine. Not wet or fouled. I can get it to keep running a bit if I hold the throttle open. So it's probably not the coils. What else could it be.

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

I haven't timed it but it will run for at least 15 minutes in a hot garage before it has trouble. If I roll it out to the driveway and there's a little breeze it can go all day.
  18. DimitriT

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

It's not just stalling. The carbs get vapor locked and stop working for hours or until I drain them. Not something I want to happen on the side of the road. I've never had it happen outside of the garage though so maybe a tiny amount of airflow is all you need.
  19. DimitriT

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

Oh I use the big fan when I sync carbs. It's impossible to keep the bike running long enough in the garage unless it gets a little air flow. I was just thinking that to avoid the problem where I'm limping along in traffic and the carbs get heat soaked, a small fan might get me through it.

Anyone consider mounting fan on their carbs?

Yea it would make sense. But once in a while you get one of those situations where you have to move two car lengths every 15 seconds. Like a toll booth.
