A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    Sonic vs Progressive springs

Now that I'm totally confused about shocks (see other thread), I might as well work on fork springs too. The front end of my bike is bouncing like a pogo stick, so I'm doing a lot of reading on springs. At the moment I'm leaning toward straight rate springs (Sonic) instead of Progressives...

    Ikon shocks on a GS650G

So they are probably Hagons. I just sent a request for more info. Thanks. Jim

    Ikon shocks on a GS650G

Hagon says that is a 12.95" shock, so it is shorter than the one I measured. Their spec sheet has a few shocks that are closer to 13.5". To further confuse myself, I checked specs from other manufacturers. Works Performance recommends a 13.5" shock and states that the shock is slightly longer...

    Ikon shocks on a GS650G

Has anyone here put Ikon shocks on a GS650G? The shock recommended by Ikon is too long (14.45" vs 13.5"). Ikon received conflicting data regarding my bike from Koni years ago. They will make custom lengths but if anyone here has a part number that is known to work, I can start there instead of...

    tail bags that look good

I used to make the eight hour trip from Toronto to Sherbrooke several times a year on a GS550T. I used Bagman soft saddle bags and a no name tank bag. It is important to get off, stretch and look at the scenery at regular intervals to avoid cramping and tingling. Jim

    83 gs650g project

I thought I had a Suzuki brochure with a large 1983 GS650G picture, but the best I can find is a thumbnail sized picture from Suzuki that shows an E style front fender. I will try to scan it.

    Front brake line configuration

I haven't thought that far ahead yet. If I do anything with the bars, it will probably be Daytonas, which are a bit flatter than the stock bars. Maybe that is a good argument for keeping the splitter, so I can change just the top hose later if I change the bars. Jim

    Front brake line configuration

I will be shopping for new brake lines for my GS650G this winter. I am curious about how people route their new lines.

    1983 GS650G project

Thanks for the votes of confidence. It's been a long time since I parked the bike. Stiff. Maybe the seals are sticking on the rods? They don't appear to be corroded. The OEM shocks can't be rebuilt but several people have recommended Ikons. I will look at the alternatives after the billing...

    1983 GS650G project

It's time for another update. The bike is on the road again and I have put a few hundred kilometers on the clock. The first order of business after the electrical fixes was to clean the tank. I found a rubber bung at the hardware store that fit the fuel gauge sender hole with a bit of trimming...

    Miserable fuel gauge sender

I think I just answered my own question. I just kept wiggling, twisting and pushing gently until the sender popped in to the tank. I have no idea exactly what I did, but it did not require brute force. I was concerned about the end of the metal rod scratching the inside of the tank but did not...

    Miserable fuel gauge sender

I disassembled my tank a couple of days ago for a cleaning and I'm stuck with the reassembly. I can't figure out how to get the miserable fuel gauge sender back into the tank. The metal box just barely fits through the hole and the float arm keeps banging into the inside of the tank when I try...

    GS650G vent hose size

Thanks guys. I'll try 6mm or 1/4". As for delivery times from the US, my wait time starts off the same as yours. The extra week or two (or more) is for Canada Post to store the package at the local mail smashing facility and Canada Customs to figure out how much to tax me. Jim

    GS650G vent hose size

I need to replace my carb vent hoses because the old ones are as hard as rocks, but I'm not sure of the correct size. Mr. Basscliff's hose routing document says that the vent hoses on a GS850 are 5mm, which should be the same as mine according to Babbit's online. However the Suzuki part is...

what did you wrench on today??

Nothing. But I declared war on the mice that chewed up the shop cloths I left my nice clean parts on. The front of my garage has lots of traps just waiting for furry visitors. If the traps don't work, the next step is napalm. Jim

    Charging system connector options

I had that site open in another tab when I posted my original question. I was looking at their RTL crimper because my crimper doesn't do open barrel connectors. They also have a decent (and cheap) terminal extraction tool. Jim

    Charging system connector options

Over in my GS650G project thread, I mentioned finding some burn marks on a connector in the headlight bucket caused by stator to regulator current. I also mentioned that I was planning to use a three conductor Metripack connector between the stator and regulator. I have no serious concerns about...

    1983 GS650G project

Now that summer is over and I am no longer driving all over the place (in a mini-van) I need to spend some quality time with the bike again. On the weekend I cleaned up the frame grounds with Deoxit and inspected the wiring harness. Here is what I found in the headlight bucket. White/red...

    Fuel Tank Sealent. Lesson learnt

I am also looking at Evapo-Rust for some minor rusting in the bottom of my tank. 83GS1100E_Tornado, it appears that you do not line the tank after the Evapo-Rust. Do you have to repeat the Evapo-Rust treatment after a year or two? A friend here in Toronto has suggested Renu at the Gas Tank...

    1983 GS650G project

Another update. Nothing ever works as expected. We have a long weekend here in Ontario and I thought the bike was almost ready for the road. I have been cleaning and fixing electrical connectors and all seemed OK. So I jumped the gun and called the insurance broker so I could register the bike...
