A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Naked Cooley

Nice shop. I wish I could shoehorn a bike lift into my work space. What paint did you use on your rear caliper and frame? I will be doing some black parts in the next few weeks. Thanks. The other GSJim.

    1983 GS650G project

As mentioned in my thread in Carb/Fuel/Exhaust, my season is now officially over. I got the bike going on three cylinders, but couldn't get number 2 to fire. I had spark but no fuel, so it's time to pull the carbs again. The rolling rebuild is now a full rebuild. I already have most of the...

Won't idle, dies with throttle and surges

No joy here. I out some Seafoam in the tank at the end of my last attempt to get the bike going. Today was the first nice day for almost two weeks so I rolled the bike out for another try. I managed to get it running on three cylinders. Number 2 was stone cold. It had spark but almost no fuel...

PM sent regarding the color talk. This might reappear on the Appearance forum later. Jim

Won't idle, dies with throttle and surges

Rats. We have two days of cold and rain in the forecast. Thursday looks good so I will try the suggested fixes then and let you know what happens. Thanks. Jim

I'll try this first. Thanks. Jim

Won't idle, dies with throttle and surges

I am a big fan of your little website. Other than the carb cleaning, which I paid someone to do, I am doing most of the work myself as a rolling rebuild. The big issue with my bike was electrical. The stator to regulator wiring in the harness cooked when the stator and regulator blew. If I have...

Won't idle, dies with throttle and surges

I didn't do the carbs myself. A reputable local mechanic did the work and the bike was running well when he was done with it. I did the electrical repairs and other routine maintenance myself. Ted (Classic Katana Owners) sends his graphics work to BDesigns in Kitchener, which is even closer to...

Won't idle, dies with throttle and surges

The title says it all. My bike was running well, but was parked for a few months while I dealt with other non-bike problems. (A main drain blockage and emergency furnace repairs killed the entertainment budget!) Yesterday looked like a good riding day, so I finshed up the electrical repairs...

    1983 GS650G project

The gas had Seafoam in it, but it was regular gas with some unknown amount of alcohol. The tank had a bit of rust along the bottom seam that cleaned up well with Evaporust. I installed a new petcock because the old one was frozen. I also tried the bike with the petcock on prime with no change...

    1983 GS650G project

One step forward, two steps back... The bike seems happy enough electrically that I was able to start it. That's all the good news though. I can't get the bike to idle properly and it won't run at all without a bit of choke. I found a loose clamp on one of the carb boots but tightening it did...

    New shocks- GS650 stock travel?

Mine are closer to 13.5 inches, or approximately 340 mm. I am leaning toward the Hagons, but home repairs killed my entertainment budget. Jim

    1983 GS650G project

Back when my bike was new, a coworker used to park his 650E beside mine every morning. His bike was blue, so I think it was an 82 model. They are definitely good looking bikes. He transferred to another location before we had a chance to ride together. I do recall that he received several...

    1983 GS650G project

Time for another update. Emergency furnace repairs sort of killed my motorcycle parts budget so I didn't get a lot of things done this summer. However I decided to fix the rat's nest of wiring behind the battery box. The following picture shows the bullet connectors on the end of the stator...

what did you wrench on today??

I cleaned my rear brakes and installed new pads. The old pads weren't completely finished so I briefly considered leaving the until the end of the season, but better safe than sorry. I think I found a rattle that was bugging me occasionally. One of the three bolts on the starter motor cover is...

    Regulator to battery fuse rating

After some additional thought, leaving the regulator with no load would overheat the regulator, not the stator, if you have a shunt regulator. The stator will always have the same output and the shunt regulator will short it to ground, generating heat in the regulator. The stator will overheat...

I already have a Saddlemen cover to install. It looks good enough but it isn't stock. Thanks. Jim

    Seat pattern- GS650G

My seat is the same as yours. Mine has a little less duct tape but I lost the plastic caps on the grab rail years ago. Jim

    Regulator to battery fuse rating

I have no idea what stator is installed on my bike. The original fried and the shop didn't put any part or model number on the work order. I doubt it was an original Suzuki part because it wasn't expensive enough. The regulator is an Electrosport ESR090. Here is another question I was thinking...
