A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Running Again, Almost?

Currently running on a portable fuel tank assuming that I was going to be checking the carb sync again after everything was running properly. Once I am back to using the bike's fuel tank, the petcock was also replaced in the earlier work. With the portable fuel tank, a golf tee is currently...

    Running Again, Almost?

It has been a while (1 year +), but the 1981 GS650L is running again for the first time tonight. I had done most of the work on getting it back in running order previously. Everything from valve adjustments and carburetor cleaning to re-building the brakes. Everything was running well until the...

    Exhaust Preservation - GS650L

Thanks. I have used VHT caliper paint on the engine components which is good for 900 degrees. The part that got me thinking was the VHT Rust Converter. Even though it is VHT brand, it has no indication of what temperature it can withstand. Maybe it doesn't matter if it is actually eliminating...

    Exhaust Preservation - GS650L

Over the winter I have torn down and rebuilt the engine of my 1981 GS650L due to needing to replace the broken rear cam chain guide. The engine is ready to go back in the frame now, but I am wondering if there is anything that I can/should do to the exhaust system first. I am not looking to...

    Install Valve Stem Seal

I have the OEM seals. I was trying to gauge if it was seated by measuring... It has been a while since I removed the old ones, but I don't recall them turning when I was trying to remove them and pretty much destroyed them all when getting them so wasn't anxious to go after the new ones with a...

    Install Valve Stem Seal

I do feel that is not going to go on any further now, but it also is not going to turn. Although it does lock over a lip on the valve guide, I am not sure that it would be able to spin. Of course I can barely get my fingers down there to try and turn it...

    Install Valve Stem Seal

That is what I had. 10mm deep socket on a 1/4" screw driver handle. Did tap a bit with a rubber mallet.

    Install Valve Stem Seal

The head is off. I thought having it on the valve stem would have it aligned better to push it on. The seal was lubed first before trying to install.

    Install Valve Stem Seal

Getting back to the rebuild of the 1981 GS 650 engine and I am starting to reinstall the valves and have new valve stem seals to install. I have only attempted one so far and used a deep, 10mm socket to try and push the seal down while it was on the shaft of the valve. I am not too confident...

1981 GS650 Broken Rear Cam Chain Guide Removed

The tensioner plunger appears to be moving freely, but is something I plan to disassemble and rebuild prior to reinstalling. Thanks, Dave

1981 GS650 Broken Rear Cam Chain Guide Removed

27,000 miles +/-. It was running well before the cam chain guide broke and the timing jumped.

1981 GS650 Broken Rear Cam Chain Guide Removed

I have finally completed the splitting of the cases of the 1981 GS650L to remove the broken rear cam chain guide. Now the question is how much more work do I want to do now to clean up and improve the lifespan of the engine before I start putting everything back together? Dave

81 GS650L Oil Pan Removal - Help Needed

The wide, thin putty knife did the trick.

81 GS650L Oil Pan Removal - Help Needed

I was knocking it with the mallet and then trying to get a plastic putty knife in there. Might have to go with a thinner, metal putty knife.

81 GS650L Oil Pan Removal - Help Needed

Having a terrible time removing the oil pan from the 81 GS650L so that I can split the case. Any suggestions for non-damaging ways to remove the oil pan? Doesn't seem that there are any overlapping edges to get an purchase to break the gasket seal. Thanks, Dave

81 GS650L Full Engine Tear Down - Rotor Removal?

Finally pulled off the rotor this weekend. A 22m crows foot to hold the rotor while removing the mounting bolt and then a $2.80 M14x1.5 bolt to thread into the rotor and pop it off of the crankshaft. One starter clutch roller came out when the rotor popped off, but no springs or sleeves went...

81 GS650L Full Engine Tear Down - Rotor Removal?

No oil leaks before the tear down. Only 27,000 miles on the engine. Will forge ahead for now. Thanks, Dave

81 GS650L Full Engine Tear Down - Rotor Removal?

I am still tearing down the engine of my 1981 GS650L so that I can split the cases and remove/replace the broken rear cam chain guide. I am pretty much to the final steps in the manual before splitting the cases which is the removal of the starter idle gear shaft and idle gear which requires...

    Sealing of Cylinder Sleeve

That seems like a strong consensus. I received the o-rings with the new gasket set and will go with that. Thanks, Dave
