    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

General question on practice within the GS group. I have my cylinders off as I tear down the engine to replace the broken rear cam chain guide. My uncle is a mechanical engineer who has done full restoration of Honda CB's.

He is recommending that I heat the cylinders and then use green loctite between the cylinder sleeve and aluminum casting rather than just rely on the o-ring to prevent oil being drawn between sleeve and casting. This solves problems on the CB's with oil pumping and leaking at the head gasket.

Any history on this being done with the GS engines?

A lot of guys don't even bother with the O-rings. At worst you could get a little oil weepage, not a leak, from the cylinder block.
 
I have the 650 apart right now, next step is changing those o-rings.

The ones in there now are probably good, but new ones came in the gasket kit, so they get changed. :-\\\

I've never seen any problem in this area on the roller bearing Suzukis. Point out to your uncle that they are an engine with very low oil pressure unlike the plain bearing Hondas. Barrel casting quality is better than the Hondas too - I've never seen a loose sleeve on a Suzuki but I have on a Honda...

Basically, it's not a problem so don't try to fix it.
 
Suzuki color coded their cylinder blocks and cylinders so they can be matched together with the proper liners to get a proper amount of press fit. If you flip over the block you will see dabs of different colored paint indicating the fitment.
 
I'd say if you have them use them and if you don't it doesn't really matter. When I did my top end I was short shipped the orings and didn't realize it until I assembling it. I asked Ray and he said no sweat just leave them out.
 
That seems like a strong consensus. I received the o-rings with the new gasket set and will go with that.
