I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Seat pattern- GS650G

My 1983 GS650G has the same grab rail shown in BigD_83's photo. I have a picture of a 1981 model that has the grab rail shown in the eBay photo. Jim

    Regulator to battery fuse rating

By "smaller fuse preferred" I was thinking about using the original wiring and stock T for the regulator output as suggested by posplayr. I have to stop posting before my first coffee is consumed. I haven't changed the regulator positive wiring yet, just the wiring between the stator and...

    Regulator to battery fuse rating

I think I should check the condition of the existing regulator positive wire before making a final decision. The stator to regulator wires in the harness were definitely overheated (discolored and brittle insulation) but I didn't think to check the regulator's red and black wires. I would also...

    Regulator to battery fuse rating

Exactly. Having cooked two stators and a regulator, I'm very cautious about fusing. I will most likely install an inline ATO fuseholder. I can grab an assortment of fuses at the same time. The ATO fuseholder at the local Crappy Tire has 12 gauge wire so it was really the little bit of wire from...

    Regulator to battery fuse rating

Steve, I forgot about the split. The positive wire from the regulator is going to carry the same current no matter which way I wire it. The original harness puts the fuses after the split but the direct to battery connection puts the fuse before the split. Salty_monk, I think it was your post...

    Regulator to battery fuse rating

I will be fixing up some bad connectors on the weekend and may decide to connect the regulator output to the battery through an in-line fuse. The main fuse on the bike is 15A, but searching on the site suggests that I might need a larger fuse for the regulator to battery connection when I go...

Progressive vs Sonic springs for fork rebuild

Looks like the polls are closed, but I'll add a vote for the Sonics. Rich was very fast at replying to emails and answering questions. The springs were shipped the same day I ordered them and they took less than a week to make the trip to Toronto. They are sitting on the shelf in the garage and...

    Good Tools For My Tinkering??

Last time I was at Princess Auto, they had Propoint branded tools, which are supposed to be higher quality than Power Fist. I haven't tried any yet. Someone told me they had JIS screwdrivers, but I never managed to find any (or anyone who knew what they were). Most of my hand tools are...

    Sonic vs Progressive springs

I'm just doing the springs this time so I don't have to completely disassemble the forks and drill the rods. I will add emulators the next time I do the seals. The seals were done last year and I should have changed the springs at the same time. Jim

    Sonic vs Progressive springs

The Sonic springs arrived a few days ago and I picked up some 15wt Belray fork oil. Further details and some pictures will be added to my project thread in a week or two when I install the springs. Jim

Congrats on the seat. They did a great job. I can't decide about the strap. I say leave it off for now and see what it looks like with the tank and side covers installed. Jim

    1983 GS650G project

Time for another update. Nothing much happened over the winter. Spring is almost here and it is just barely warm enough to move Mrs. GSJim's garden stuff out of the garage so I have room to work on the bike. As mentioned previously, the bike runs but still needs work. This is turning into a...

    Ikon shocks on a GS650G

Thanks for the extra info. I'm dithering between Hagons and Ikons. I like the Ikons because they are rebuildable but I also like the Hagons because they are a lot less expensive. Both companies have 340mm (13.5") shock bodies available. I'm waiting for replies about recommended springs. Jim

    Oil - Canuck owners

JASO MA class oil is for wet clutch applications. Rotella T 15W40 and T6 5W40 (full synthetic) both have MA approval. I have used both in the bike with no issues. I usually grab a jug of Rotella when Canadian Tire has it on sale. Good oil reference: http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Oils1.html...

Getting the rear wheel off the ground withthe centrestand

My 83 GS650G shocks (originals) are a hair under 13.5" (340mm). I can get a more exact measurement when the weather improves enough to drag the bike out of the garage. Jim

Getting the rear wheel off the ground withthe centrestand

My 1983 GS650G rear tire is about an inch off the ground when the bike is on the centerstand (130/90-17 tire and original shocks). My long-departed GS550T also had clearance because I used to lube the chain with the bike on the centerstand. Jim

    Sonic vs Progressive springs

salty_monk, I guess I could calculate the rate of the old spring, but I think I will do something un-GSR-like and spend some money. I plan to order the Sonics to have a good starting point for experiments. speedyandypandy, the forks were rebuilt last year with new seals and fresh oil. I asked...

    Sonic vs Progressive springs

I exchanged emails with Rich at Sonic about my bike. The spring rate calculator on his web site gave various answers between 0.9 and 1.0 kg/mm depending on my estimates of bike weight and riding style. Rich recommends 0.9 kg/mm and 15wt fork oil for my setup, which is as good a starting point as...

    Ikon shocks on a GS650G

I never thought of that. New part is 62100-34X00, old part was 62100-34240, both with the 34. I can get 340mm shocks from Hagon or Ikon and they would be very close to the 13.5" I measured. Jim
