Compression: Before and After Valve Adjustment

Curiosity question concerning the relationship of the valve clearance adjustment to compression. This is on the GS650 engine. Purchase a bike that had not been running for a few years. One of the first things that I did was to check the compression to make sure there were no major engine issues...

81GS650L: First Start, Running on 2 Cylinders

Received the NGK spark plug boots and tachometer cable tonight. Bike now appears to be running on all four cylinders, although the number 4 exhaust does not seem as hot as the others. It is idling fairly steady at 1,100 rpm, but has some misfiring at idle. At first I thought it was primarily...

81GS650L: First Start, Running on 2 Cylinders

Thanks for the tips. Went away for the July 4th weekend, so will try again later next week and post back with the results. Wish I was home right now since I am sitting in the rain in NH...

81GS650L: First Start, Running on 2 Cylinders

Only ran it for a few minutes on two cylinders anticipating it to be running on 3 cylinders with the spark boot issue. Air screws were set at 2.5 turns out. Fan ready to go once it is running longer.

81GS650L: First Start, Running on 2 Cylinders

Bench sync was done before reinstalling the carburetors. I used a fairly thin wire and they are about as close as I think I could get them. Backed off the idle control knob after the bench sync.

81GS650L: First Start, Running on 2 Cylinders

All new OEM fuel, vacuum, and vent hoses installed and I do have a golf tee in the vacuum hose. Had tried both ways on the vacuum line and golf tee was in when it was running last night, but exhaust still cold to the touch.

81GS650L: First Start, Running on 2 Cylinders

Forgot to mention that I had checked compression previously, but just double checked again now. Cold Compression: 120 psi 120 psi 120 psi 115 psi Photo of the spark plugs as received from the PO and after trying to start: No. 2 does appear to be wet.

81GS650L: First Start, Running on 2 Cylinders

Got the bike started for the first time last night, but it is only running on two cylinders... Current status: Valves adjusted Carbs dipped, o-rings replaced Intake o-rings replaced Auxiliary fuel tank Cylinders 2 and 4 dead Checking spark before trying to start, no. 4 spark plug boot is...

    81GS650L No Crank

Bike started tonight. The kill switch appears to be the flaky part, so some cleaning probably necessary there. Although the bike did start, it was only running on two cylinders. No. 4 wasn't firing due to a bad spark plug boot. No.2 exhaust header was still cold after running the bike for a...

81GS650L - Battery Box Negative Wire?

I have printed out the color wiring diagram and b/w version from the manual to make sure the color designations are interpreted properly. Went big, made a 24"x36" of the color version and some 11"x17" for review. My primary experience is with boats and I did most everything I needed to do with...

81GS650L - Battery Box Negative Wire?

Thanks for all of the suggestions on improving the ground connections. At this point I am trying to stay with the original setup until I get the bike running for the first time. Once it is running, then I'll go for the reliability improvements. I believe I properly connected the R/R to the...

    81GS650L No Crank

Connect the clutch starter disconnect wires inside the headlight, but still no go on the starter button. Wire jumper from battery 12v to starter relay wire (yellow/green tracer) doesn't seem to do anything. Removing quick connect of yellow/green tracer wire at solenoid and applying to 12v...

    81GS650L Mystery Parts

Not a stem bolt, but very close to the one you indicated. On the bike, those bolts are painted black and most other bolts on the bike are a plain head or a large number in the middle of the head. This one is probably an aftermarket bolt. Approximately 10mm x 63mm. There are small markings on...

    81GS650L No Crank

Thought I was getting closer to trying to start the 81 GS650L today. Previously I had cranked over the engine to do a compression test and everything seemed fine. Yesterday I completed the reinstall of the air cleaner, carbs, head cover, and clutch cable. Today I thought I was ready to try and...

    81GS650L Mystery Parts

Too bad they didn't include the tools... Can't see where a bolt this size would be needed with the components that they had removed.

    81GS650L Carb Sync?

I have reinstalled the carburetors and air box after a full tear down, cleaning, and o-ring replacement. Attempting to start the bike for the first time should happen soon. I did bench sync the four carburetors best I could before the reinstall. A question now on performing the vacuum sync once...

    81GS650L Mystery Parts

Reinstalled the air box and carburetors today after doing a full tear down, cleaning, and o-ring replacement for the carburetors. All of these parts and the head cover were removed by the PO when I purchased the bike, so I have not seen where some of the pieces go. I have two parts that were...

81GS650L - Battery Box Negative Wire?

Thanks everybody. Hopefully I'll be to this point soon. Just going to bench sync the carburetors before reinstalling.

81GS650L - Battery Box Negative Wire?

Thanks. I'll take a look at the GS Stator Health info. I had an earlier post, "where does the r/r go?" since it is currently just laying inside the frame from the PO. Hopefully once I get the carbs and air box back in this will start to make more sense.

    81GS650L Head/Breather Cover Bolts

Head cover and breather cover were removed by the PO and I had a bag of bolts when I picked it up. Now that the valve adjustment is done and ready to close the engine up I find that 1 breather cover bolt is missing. I'll probably find more missing as I put the air box back together, but...
