DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Mixture screws stopped working? Idles best with screws all the way in?

Hmm, I guess they come in different style bodies for the twins.

    Carb Dip aftertmath

Yea any water in the gas settles right in that spot and corrodes the metal. I recently cleaned the carbs on the 550 after putting 40k miles on it and that area was caked with that white residue.

Mixture screws stopped working? Idles best with screws all the way in?

Yea something looks wrong. Either in how the measure tubes are functioning or how the floats are set. Are there any air vent tubes or holes on the carbs? It's almost like those may be plugged and the bowl is not venting. If it builds positive pressure it would indicate with crazy fuel levels...

    Charging Question - 1981 GS450S

Sounds like a partially fried stator. I've been riding with a bad stator now for a few months. It will reach 14.6V on the highway but if I stop it will drop to 11.9. I have a replacement stator on hand but I'm waiting for the one I have to go completely before I replace it. Seems like they are...

Mixture screws stopped working? Idles best with screws all the way in?

If you use the method of measuring the float height then the 22.4mm is with the gasket off but that value could be different for your bike. You need to find a spec for your bike. I thought the 1982 GS450 has BS32 (or BS34) carbs which are essentially the same carbs as most GSs. These have a...

Mixture screws stopped working? Idles best with screws all the way in?

Sounds like a float height issue. Measuring the float height by putting a caliper or ruler against the float itself is unreliable. You need to measure it using an external tube like shown here on pg 14-38. To get my fuel level correct I build a stand where I could level the carbs precisely while...

Bike starts hard, then runs fine

Right. This sounds like a clogged starter circuit or a fuel level problem. There's a Mikuni BS32SS manual on BassCliff's web site which has some great info on where all the circuits are in your carburetors and how the float level should be measured. Like chef said make sure your starter tube is...

    who's replaced their cam chain?

Measured mine recently. 46K miles at 6.14 inches. And that's the chain length :)

    tires for my GS550L

I'm currently running D404s but the front is a 100/90-19. The fatter front tire has messed up the handling a little as it requires more effort to lean into turns. I really want to replace it with the 90/90-19 they recommend. Unfortunately there's limit choices for 90/90-19. I can go with the...

How many idiots does it take to install an airbox?

One trick I use on the 550 is to get a long dowel or screw driver and push the airbox onto the carbs from inside the airbox. You need to remove the filter for this of course. It helps if the airbox rubbers are a bit soft and new-ish.

    New to me GW250

I don't like the styling. The bump outs for the front turn signals are too big. I would've preferred less plastic and turn signals on stalks. In other words a retro look. I don't modify bikes. Although for this one I added a center stand, a Givi monolock top case and a Puig Touring II...

    New to me GW250

Compared to the Katana it is definitely buzzy but its not a bike for long trips. I rode it 50 miles to bring it home after I bought it and that was just about my limit on it. My daily commute is about 25 miles. One thing about it is its setup for new riders so the clutch and throttle are really...

    New to me GW250

Yes water-cooled. I got fed up with the bike overheating in traffic. These are built in China BTW and you can tell from looking at some of the components but I think the important bits are still made in Japan.

    New to me GW250

Maybe not a GS but still a UJM in the sense that its not a cruiser and its not a sportbike. Payed $2000 for it and after another $500 to register it and add some farkles I have a nice little reliable commuter. It is a little underpowered for highway hyperdrive speeds but it will hum along at...

    Stem seal replacement.

Yea you have to be a safe cracker to feel the positive snap when inserting those seals. They slip over the ridge very smoothly. I think everyone has to ruin a few seals before they figure out how much pressure is adequate. It really isn't much. Try inserting the seal gently and then pulling it...

    1980 GS850 top end rebuild

Valve lapping. If you get a clear unbroken grey circle after a light lapping on both surfaces you are probably fine.

    Rubber plugs turned to goo

Where'd you buy the plugs from? Usually they get hard and maybe shrink a little over time. But I've never seen them dissolve. Any chance you sprayed some cleaner in there with the plugs left in?

    Battery acid refill help!!

You can try topping up the cells with distilled water. The battery should have lines on the side which show the correct electrolyte levels. But it sounds like your battery is pretty old. There's really no way to recondition a lead acid battery. If the battery doesn't work after you've topped up...

Oil Leak Near Shifter Seal? Could Be The End?

There are three seals in that area: drive shaft shifter clutch push rod They are all easy to replace without opening the cases. There has to be a write up on this site on how to replace them.
