A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

    83 gs1100e wiring diagram

It may take a couple of days, but I can scan one out of my shop manual into a pdf file and send it to you.

    Shims vs. Threaded tappets

Shims don't need adjusting as frequently as tappets, but it does take a little longer to do. With the shim over bucket arrangement used on the 8 valve GS's, there is a chance that you can spit a shim out if you overrev the engine far enough. The newer bikes use shim under bucket that eliminates...

    Front Brake Switch Question

The whole switch assembly is $6 at Partsnmore. The only problem is that there is a $35 minimum order. I usually stock up on oil filters and other miscellaneous stuff when I order from them.

How do you feel about JB Weld

If metal pieces of the engine are broken, JB Weld may do the trick for you. But if you have a bad gasket, which sounds much more likely, it will be a waste of time and money. If it's a small leak, live with it for the rest of the riding season, then buy the manual and gaskets to do the job...

How to winterize when a head gasket is done??

After reading through this again, I realized which nuts you're talking about. Those are for the head. If you loosen any of those, you should loosen all of the head nuts and bolts, then re-tighten them in the proper sequence, to the proper torque settings. Over tightening any of them, or having...

    Owwwwwwwouch SONOFA....

Most of the spray carb cleaners use methylene chloride, which works really well, but is nasty stuff to deal with. I've had my share of solvents in the eyes due to working in labs for 30 years. Chlorinated solvents are the worst, with toluene and xylene close behind. I'm very good about using...

How to winterize when a head gasket is done??

Check around on pricing, but in my experiance, once you start talking about base, head, and valve cover gaskets, it's more cost effective to buy a complete gasket kit. At least that was the case for me with the 16 valve engines. If that's the case for you, plan on replacing the valve stems while...

    Trasmission/Cluth questions

Don't know what the difference is between the two, but when I go the the parts fiche on the Alpha sports site, they only show the second part number listed, even though both cables show in the picture. http://www.alpha-sports.com/choose_the_year_suzuki_you_have.htm

Get your GS850 Shop Manual Here!

Even though I don't have an 850, I decided to download it. Now that I have the manual, I suppose I'll have to start looking for an 850 I can use it on.

    Vacuum guage vs mercury manometer

If you go with gauges, you'll want to to hook all the gauges up to a common vacuum source. There should be a small screw on the back of the gauge so they can all be set to read the same.

    Best place to purchase jets??

The site listed above has more parts for the older carbs, but if all you need are jets, this one is OK too. http://www.carbparts.com/index.html

    Replaced Petcock / Still Problems

If you haven't done a valve adjustment since getting the bike, do one. It may or may not be the cause of your problems, but it's best to eliminate that as a possible source. I would put in fresh plugs if that hasn't been done. These may not be the problems, but you're better off knowing that the...

    petrol /gas extra tanks ?

If you use a luggage rack, I would recommend going with one of the Sampson models. You could have one fabricated to go into the space the tail section & rear fender occupy. It would probably hold 2-3 gallons, and depending on which model GS you have, may not look that bad.

    "Trigger Green Traffic Lights"

You are correct in that the detectors work by sensing the interruption of the electromagnetic field of the inductive loop. A magnet will have a greater effect on that field than another piece of metal with the same mass. Iron and steel will have a greater effect than aluminum. I've had some...

    Digital Caliper for $16

Another thumbs up for these. I bought one for work a couple years ago. Hard to beat for the price, so I picked one up for myself, too.

    Hole in Crankcase

JB Weld is an epoxy, so using it is not really welding. What type of engine is it? You will need to pull it apart to clean the sump out. I think you might be able to just pull the oil pan to do this.

Auxiliary gas tank for more range

You can try this place for ideas. http://sampson-sporttouring.com/index.html I know a guy who made his own for his Kawasaki Voyager XII. Went back behind the rear wheel. He just added a pump to transfer the gas to his main tank. One that fit on the rear seat, similar to the EZ tank on the...

petcock tested fine but no vacuum from Carb?

You won't lose vacuum at the carbs with a leak in the boots between the airbox and carbs. If you don't get sufficient vacuum to open the petcock, even with just the starter motor, you most likely have a leak between the carbs and the engine. If you have the original boots between the carbs and...

Any helpful tips for bleeding brakes on my 650G

I found a drill the same size as the hose that I attach to the caliper, drilled a hole into the top of a water bottle, and just let the brake fluid run into there.

    Dennis Kirk

Dennis Kirk is my preferred vendor for anything they carry, outside of tires. They have never failed to give good service. Earlier this year I was ordering some bar-end mirrors, and after I place the order I remembered that they had some rain pants on clearance that I wanted to buy. Not wanting...
