    Stator replacement questions

I used a #3 with my impact driver and they came off easily. The screw heads look identical to the ones on the coils. When I first tried my driver with a #2 bit on the coil screws it instantly turned the philips into a complete circle. The #3 took the remaining screws out easily. Regarding the...

    What type of Loctite?

Thanks for the replys. Like I said I've already used the blue for the stator. I hope that was allright. I guess it's too late now anyway. The red is still in it's package so I think I'll be returning it. What about the cam bearing caps and the outer covers? Blue green or none? Thanks...

    What type of Loctite?

Hi. I am in the process of an almost complete engine overhaul. I have blue and red loctite and was wondering if anyone had any advice as to generally when to use each. I am particullarly interested in the camshaft bearing bolts. So far I have used blue for the stator and R/R. I was told by...

    GS1100 Seats

So isn't it a GL than? I didn't realize the about the tank being smaller. My manual states it is a 4.3 gallon tank and I never believed it held more that about 3.5. That may explain it. Thanks. Eddie V

    GS1100 Seats

I thought I had an 1100 GL. It's labeled L on the side panel but it is a shaftie which I thought was designated as a G. Eddie V

    82-gs1100 piston cleaning

Thanks again. I think I am leaning towards leaving the block on. I've had some leaks but the best I can see it's been from a broken bolt on the cam cover and the tach cable. My charging system crapped out when troubleshooting it at 5000rpm like the manual said (I wouldn't typically idle it that...

    stupid, stupid spark plug problem

Have the other plugs come out with out a problem? If this is the first time the plugs have been removed, my guess is the previous person that installed them stripped the threads and did whatever it took to get it sealed. Ie: Locked it so tight that it seazed with heat or even epoxed it if it...

    82-gs1100 piston cleaning

82-gs1100, engine rebuild 82-gs1100, engine rebuild Thanks for all the responses. I became concerned of exactly what Dink mentioned when I realized there are no additional bolts holding down the block. Will the block just pull right off now? Won't the pistons just be dangling then? I imagine...

    82-gs1100 piston cleaning

Any advice on cleaning black carbon buildup on pistons. I don't want to go further than removing the head. The piston domes seem to have carbon flakey deposits. I was considering a brass wire brush attachment to my drill. Thanks. Eddie V

    GS1100 gas tank petcock

I just today took the petcock off of my 82 gs1100. There seems to be the remains of a thin paper/cork gasket that I'll be dealing with soon. Eddie V

    84 GS1100GK oil leak

Check the breather hose. I had the same problem when I first bought my 82 1100gl. I feared the worst. This forum saved me and told me the breather hose may be worn. Well, when I looked it was totally disconnected. It's located under the gas tank but you can see it and connect it without removing...

    Switching petcocks

Petcock Petcock I'd love to change mine too. I believe I had a problem with it starving for fuel in the cold last year and it most likely was due to the diaphram. I have a 1982 gs1100gl. Can someone explain the procedure to replace the petcock and remove the gas tank. Thanks...

    Starter removal

Hi, Are you pushing it straight in parallel to the starter motor shaft. It won't come straight up because the gear is inserted into a cylinder and sealed with an o-ring. The starter has to first be pulled out of the cavity and then it will be clear to lift out. Hope it helps. Eddie V

    Vapor Lock ????

Thanks for all the replys. My reserve seems to hold almost 1 1/2 gallons of gas. That's 60 miles. Besides, I have a fuel gauge so I don't really see the need for the reserve. When I first got the bike, the gauge went down to 1/4 tank and it died (100 miles on the tank). I never thought it was...

    Vapor Lock ????

Hi, Last night I rode my gs1100gl home from work, a 40 mile trip on the expressway. ABout half way the bike started bogging down as if it was starving for gas. I had about 1/4 tank left and the petcock was on reserve as I always keep it. It progressivly got worse for about 5 miles and...

    gs1100gl oil leak.

Hi to all and thanks for all the help. The starter was very easy to get out without removing the carbs. If anyone does this though, be extra careful with the starter 12v supply stud. I cracked the bakelite insulator and it shifted slightly. Thought nothing of it but it turned out the internal...

    gs1100gl oil leak.

OK. All seems to be pointing to the starter O-ring seal. Thanks for all the help, especially Al who sent the pictures. Now, can anyone advise me on the best way to get the starter out. It seems the manuals say the carbs have to be removed but I'm being told that they may not have to be. I'm sure...

OK, now I feel really stupid.... Oil leak??

Ludicrous... Read my recent post. I have exactly the same thing. The oil would drip onto the toe of my left boot and down the kickstand. I found it to be coming from this vent hole I talk about. It is still in the shop and I too think it's going to have to be riden for awhile for the oil to get...

    gs1100gl oil leak.

The hole is in line with the front part of the gear shift lever cover. The bike is shaft driven so there is no sprocket cover. The cover with the wires coming out that you refererred to I believe is the oil pressure sending unit. It's forward of that and in a narrow channel of the engine block...

    Fuel Petcock

The long side of the lever actually has an arrow on mine and with this longer side pointing forward it is in reserve. From what I understand there is no off position which brings up a question I have. How would one remove the gas tank without an off position. Is the only way to run it dry...
