    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

Hi Londonboards. CT14 area so a way away from you. Thanks for the offer. Might take you up on it when things free up a little. Spent some time dodging the rain showers and started to pull the carbs apart. Each one individually so tops off, bottoms off main jet out and tube. Dip the brass in...

Tank back together. Fuel gauge sender unit back in with new seal, outer cover with drain catcher, refurbished fuel tap with inner workings and exterior seal and the fuel cap back on. Still waiting on the screwdriver to get at those pilot jets. Maybe tomorrow it will arrive and I can see how...

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

Busy day today here at Mad towers. A small white envelope dropped through my door (thank you Mr Barr) and two boxes arrived. Inside one was Bilt Hamber Atom Mac and in the other was 2 Kgs of Bilt Hamber DEOX-C. Out with the tank, kettles on and get the hot tap working and away I went. Sealed...

Been having bad weather here so cant get enough space in the garage to work on the GS. Its a bit cramped. A few parts on order to sort the tank and a screwdriver to get the pilot jets out. Will post again when I have got some progress to report.

    Getting the pilots out?

Going to sound daft but is there a set length and size screwdriver that you need to get that fits the pilot jets slot and is long enough? I dont have any flat bladed screwdrivers. I use these sorts of screwdriver kits. Kohree 115 in 1 Precision Screwdriver Set, Mini Screwdriver Set DIY Repair...

Wish I could find the old forum and the carb rebuild pages. 'You tube' sucks for people doing CV carbs. Used to have a link but lost it with the PC change and the new forum.

Well the carbs are out and sitting on the bench. 1,2,3,4 bodies don't look in any trouble whats so ever. They are clean and good inside. NO 4 float bowl wasnt great. A little soak in fuel and a polishing cloth and its taken the rust and dirt out. Sadly the float pins wont budge...

Well had a slow day so far today. Checked the rear brake calliper as it was sticking on the rear when wheeling the bike around to work on it. All seemed fine and when you pushed the brake pedal you could feel the pads move forward and back. Not a lot of corrosion in there and as the pads are...

Not a lot to report today, had a lazy day with my feet up. Will try and do more tomorrow if my right ankle is better.

Cheers. I think I have a 1100 base gasket but no '0' rings. The other issue is the ring cost. I will check you link. :tranquillity:

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

Day 3 of the tank saga. Its taking a lot longer than I thought to clean just a little bit of rust inside the tank. The Evapo-rust has gone black. When I 'washed' the tank out with water it flash rusted as I was removing the water. That was a big shocker. So had to seal the tank up again and...

    1980 GS1000ET back from the dead.....I hope.

That's my other fear. The barrels lifting and the base gasket seal breaking. I'm not in for a whole strip it down to base gasket, new base gasket, 'O' rings, new rings, honing the barrels and then a full rebuild of the top end. I mean Suzuki genuine pistons rings are ?125 a piston!! That ?500...

When bikes were bikes not the ones of today. Nice ride. Lets hope you can get it sorted and running before work starts up again and you dont have any more free time. Good luck.

I'm thinking about getting the head off. I know I'm a way away from that at the moment but was wondering what if anything I could do to help the two small bolts by Cylinders 1 and 4 to come out without snapping and shearing off and the small one that pinches the front between the head and the...

Well this is the fuel gauge sender unit.... It's rather rusty and when I connect it back to the power and the bike, lift the float the unit sadly doesn't operate the fuel gauge on the clocks. I'm not sure if it can be repaired or I am going to have to find a replacement one from somewhere...

Another day bring another walk to the garage, well its only 6 ft away from the back door. Pulled the tank for the first time in over 10 years. Dropped the usual rubber grommet down the battery tray and carbs gap so a bit of fishing got that out. Pulled the airbox out and then lifted the tank...

Gasket sets for a CV carb rebuild

Thanks for the info. I changed my intake boots and 'O' rings about 12 years ago and I swapped the JIS screws with hex heads (all Suzuki) so that I know I can get them out if needed. I might do the float bowls with 'Allen' heads or socket screws and the tops too.
