A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

A little whine with your ride sir?

Hi all, I've started to notice a little bit of vibration/whine when I decelerate on my 1982 GS1100GL. If I slow down gently it's okay, but it's noticeable if I close the throttle at speed. I'm going to check the oil levels at each end of the driveshaft, but I wondered if any other 'shafty'...

Blocked pilot jet - any tips?

That makes sense Steve, thanks! I've been 'around the houses' with my diagnosing today, and come back to the opinion that I have a blocked pilot jet on the number 3 carb. As I'd had the carbs off and apart while I was doing my top end rebuild, I wondered if the carb balance had gone out of...

Blocked pilot jet - any tips?

Hi Steve, I've used the colortune before and it seemed to be pretty consistent. The trouble I had this time was that the engine was not idling well but was pretty good at about 2000rpm. Having recently seen a diagram that showed that other jets take over more as the throttle butterfly opens, I...

Blocked pilot jet - any tips?

Ladies and Gents, I'm just in the stages of tuning my GS1100GL following a top-end rebuild, and have been using a color-tune to set the idle mixture. What I have discovered is that the No 3 carb has a blocked pilot jet. I expect that I know the answer.....but I wondered if you have any tips...

    Electric connector help

Thanks bwringer! Some great websites there and some very useful information! I tend to use a mechanical crimper and run some solder into the joint too. Does your 'NEVER soldered' comment mean 'never only soldered'?....or is there something about soldering electrical connectors that I should...

    Electric connector help

Thanks Ed - as always! I've had a look at the newbie mistakes and will definitely check for/make a dedicated battery ground when I get back out to the garage. I'm wondering if the melted block is old damage, as when I first got the bike, the stator and r/r were both blown. After studying...

    Electric connector help

Ladies and Gents, Do any of you know the designation of the electrical connectors shown in the photos below and where I can get some replacements? They're from my 1982 GS1100GL. Many thanks, (Ah, it seems I can only attach the one image, so you won't be able to see how melted the other side of...

    Top end rebuild - O-Rings or No-Rings?

Dear all, Once again, I seek your advice... You may or (more probably) may not know that I'm putting my GS1100GL's engine back together. After looking at Nessism's experiences with Athena gaskets, I've decided to use the NE gasket kit as it looks a much better product and doesn't have a thick...

Which head gasket do I return??

Oh dear....... Nessim and Hannibal, if you knew of someone who had not realised that there was such a problem with gasket sets and had then made the 'schoolboy error' of purchasing a gasket set without looking at the forum what would....................hmmm.......I'm guessing that you probably...

Which head gasket do I return??

Ladies and Gentlemen....Once again I need your advice...... I'm slowly rebuilding the engine of my GS1100 GL and I bought a NE gasket kit. Unfortunately, I found that a couple of the gaskets didn't fit (Clutch cover and Rocker cover.) So I phoned my supplier who was very helpful and sent me a...

Another issue - one of my nuts is mis-shaped! ;-) (Cylinder stud problems)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! This morning I popped round to my local motor factors and picked up a 14mm socket that has 6 rounded lumps inside it that grip the faces of the nut rather than the edges, and I have loosened it. UK GS Nut - Thank you for your very kind offer...

    Mystery washer in my sump!

Thanks everyone! Steve - thanks for the detailed instructions. As you can see from the photo, there was no shim on the inside of the idler! I am very pleased to report that the wayward shim is now back where it should be!

Another issue - one of my nuts is mis-shaped! ;-) (Cylinder stud problems)

The front left cylinder stud securing nut (closest to the cam-chain) on my GS1100GL has been deformed. A 14mm socket will not grip it, and a 13mm socket is too small. Do I: attempt to file the faces of the nut so that I can get the 13mm socket onto it? Or, use a punch to tap it around to...
