1100G Buzziness Just me and what to do.

I have a new to me 1982 1100g that is in great condition. I'm working through the "normal" GS issues, like changing all the fluid and doing the valves ect. I did a carb synch and I have all the running issues resolved. Very nice idle and pulls without hesitation all the way to the top. BTW bike is stock configuration with tregards to airbox and exhaust, with the exception of a K and N air filter. I have also used a colortune on the mixture settings. Running 10w40 dino oil.

The thing I notice most, coming from an 82 850G is a general buzz starting about 2500 rpm and continuing till just under 4000 rpm. At 4K it tails off and at highway speeds it isn't really noticable.

Is this a trait associated with this motor or do I have something loose, broken, adjusted wrong, ect. The buzz isn't terrible but it will wake you up when spinning it through the rev range.

Has anyone done anything to combat this if they are expirienceing the same problem.

Make sure the horns are properly tighten down.

Also check ALL the motor mounts for tightness.

The 850 is renowned for smoothness, I wouldn’t expect an 1100 to be the same.

I know how everybody says the 850 is smooth, It is. I'm just wondering what the reason is for a buzz in an 1100 and if there is any way to suppress it?

I'm not kidding. that was the buzz that drove me crazy for two years.

You can change the grips, fill the bars with lead shot, bar snake, etc

My 1100 buzz's around 3k above it or below it goes away.

Hi,

Adjust your valves first, then sync your carbs. This will go a long way toward smoothing out the engine. Do you have a "buzzing" or a "rattling"? Every time I had a "buzz" between certain rpm's it was caused by something actually loose and rattling on the bike. Check tank badges, side covers, horns, anything that can loosen up and vibrate.

Jim, the 1100 motor although smooth is not as smooth as the 850. I would say the 850 is the smoothest, the 1000 a close second and the 1100 is third in my opinion. I tried the bar snake on my 1000 and did not notice much change. I did put the Salamander bar ends on my 1100 and definately noticed an improvement. I am currently running these # 714 type Progrip gel type grips and the Salamander cylindrical type bar ends and have been happy with the results.

That was pretty low, mang.

I noticed a brief buzzing lately at 2500 rpm, but can't seem to find the offending loose item....checked the oil-cooler, front fender, mounts, headlight, levers etc., but don't think I checked the horns....hopefully that might be it. ray:

Clean the carbs well and set them up carefully.

Incorrectly set-up carbs, or poorly perfoming ones, will cause the buzz vibration.
