    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

140/80 17 for GS1000E?

I have a very worn Himax by Chengshin, which at 2500kms is not a long time. I cannot seem to make a tyre last. Before that I had a Bridgestone Spitfire that was even more worn at 2000kms.

I have been offered a slightly lower profiled and wider (as above) to replace my 130/90 17. I run a very short chain and have the wheel as far forward as possible to keep the wheelbase short (no I dont have stability issues) and wondered if the larger tyre would bind on the swing arm. I know I will have to "adjust" the brake arm to fit, but modding the swing arm seems false economy... Thanks CJ
 
I've run 140/80 17 on the back of my 1100E. I found that the tire wore down even faster then the 130/90 17. The narrow rim caused the tire to "bend-out" on the outer circumference, giving a smaller contact patch thus more wear.

I understand your concerns with tires wearing out fast (I see the same thing) but I advise you to stay with the 130.

I think you are probably right and your logic makes sense. I am just afraid of blowing $100 on a boot that may only last a couple of months... More Chengshin for me then... CJ
 
You need a 3.5in rear rim to make the 140 work. This combo fits on my 750, the only mod is to fabricate a thinner rear caliper torque arm. The GS1150 used a 3.5 in rear rim and the spoke pattern matched my stock 750 front. I have used the Metzeler ME-99 in 140/80 and Dunlop 591 in 140/70 rears with the Metzeler lasting longer. Yes, I bought the GS1150 rim a long time ago- it was a simple bolt on mod. I used the stock 750 spacers, rotor and caliper. The only mod was to fabricate a narrow single sided arm for the rear caliper. The tire clears well in the swingarm, either 140/80 or 140/70. The sprocket carriers are even the same.

I believe that the early 1150 rears were only 3.0in and were widened to 3.5in on later models. I think mine was off an 85 model, it is 17x3.5.

I run a 130/90 on my '79 GS1000E. I wouldn't try to go any bigger. Not safe.
