If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1978 Gs 1000 E stator question

The best test of the stator is the running AC test unless you have a megger, the resistance tests are useless.. Didn't you have two pair that read low voltage, you want to be close to 70 VAC on all three pair? If not your stator is bad. I was the one who said the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask.

Thx old vet .. and yeah now that you metion it , you were the one who told me that !!
When I spoke to the owner of this salvage shop . He seamed pretty nice and did assure me if there was a problem with the stator to just bring it back and well try another one ...
Keeping fingers crossed I get lucky on the first try !!

Hold him to that or ask him if he has a megger. It shows megohm resistance under high voltage so you can tell if the insulating varnish is breaking down. You could probably get it tested by someone in your area for next to nothing by a company that deals in rewinding electric motors so you won't have to do this trial and error. The resistance check with a meter is only going to show up a direct short. My stator failed after a year of use after I installed a series R/R so this is a total crap shoot unless you test it with a megger or whatever the electronic equivalent is today. I didn't listen when they told me here that a dark color varnish meant it had overheated and would go bad. Don't accept one unless it is a medium dark amber color. You can still see all the individual wire windings through the varnish of a good one unless it is epoxy coated.

Thats great to know ty ..this place is 35 min away .so it shouldnt take to much time to pick one up . Install in bike then I can test it that way looking for 70 vac on each leg .... thx
Hope one day to have half the knowledge you do in this department ... :dancing: you da man

No I am not, posplayr is da man, I knew a lot, but I learned here just like you are learning. PASS IT ON. posplayr has credentials and documented experience that most of us mere mortals wish we had. Check my post below, I added a way to visually tell if it "MIGHT" be good when you look at one.

I plan on purchasing a new R/R sh775 kit . New stator , 4 into1 exhuast , complete carb re build and stage 3 kit , pods too . But for now its one step at a time ... just picked up new throttle cables , never worked on these carbs before that has a cable for forward and reverse pull , but it should be fun ... break hoses etc to I wanna replace in off season ..

Which post below ??? Lol

Stainless steel braided brake lines are the best initial safety upgrade you can make. They limit hose expansion and put more brake force to the wheels. Unless I have you mixed up with someone else, you have responsibilities more important than just riding, safety and gear should be your priority. I will not suggest you not riding but you get my drift.

OK, OK, enough already, my ears are burning. :D

As much as I seem to live on this site, I do have to do something that resembles "work" every once in a while.

"... Since you have the 18 pole stator (but don't/can't use Steve's rewinder, ...
:-k

... sorry dont know who Steve is , ...

... , but can he have my stator re wound by the end of the day and shipped back to toronto ?? Lol stator pooched out on my 650 now too !!
I have one for each of your bikes, ready to go.
You are looking for a 18 pole stator. You can trust Steve on this site, he is involved with a rewinding service and will be a more affordable safe source for a quality stator. Hopefully he can ship to Canada.
Yes, I can.

"....sorry dont know who Steve is , "

Steve is sure to show up- probably/might have rewound stators in his pockets -I don't know about shipping your way.
No, sorry, my pockets aren't quite THAT big.

Yes, stators shipped to the 'lower 48' of the US go for $85. That is basically $80 for the stator and $5 and a few cents for shipping. I just shipped one to Canada earlier this week, the cost is $25, so I can ship one to you for US$105. If you would like two of them, they will fit in the same box and ship for the same amount, so the total would be US$185. I could get them into the mail this evening, you might have them by the middle of next week.

Let me know.

Good to meet you Steve ... im Keith !!
Wow that sounds awsome !! Im assuming this is all done through pay pal ?
Unfortunately I dont have one of those accounts set up . Well had one set up . Just could never figure out how to get funds into it ... it was impossible to do with out a credit card , so I purchased a couple of those vanilla prepaid credit cards and it still wouldnt allow me to put money on the account ..
Ill check with the girlfriend tonight and see if she could help me get it worked out ...

That would be the preferred method.

You don't have to have a credit card, just a bank account. You set it up for direct transfer. When you use PayPal, it will draw the funds out of your bank account. Yeah, it's not quite as 'secure' as using a credit card, but it is available.

I tried my banks chequing account first ..it didnt work !! , I believe I even called paypal in regards to this , and they said yes in the states you can do this . But not in canada ... this was a couple yrs back !! Perhaps it has changed ..
Ill look into it , again ty & you will most likely be hearing from me soon !!

This bank to paypal method no longer works for me (though it used to)- many emails to paypal got replies that were of no value, so I finally gave up . Apparently, paypal no longer likes me and my bank. No problem, every wall can be circumvented!

Yeah im on my paypal now Tom ... I remembered the password from 2 yrs ago hahaha .. and yeah its not allowing me to add my chequing account . If it did allow me it saysit could take 5-6 days for the money to appear in my paypal from my chequing account .. regardless it keeps saying error!! Itjust seams as though every path I take these last few weeks end with a cliff !!! Hahaha

Keep at it -your persistence is a good example to others.

Note that the leg to ground tests in the revised phase b stator tests are equivalent to a "poor man's megger" test. There are many ways for the stator to fail. If for example the leg to leg voltages are high and even it does not mean there is no short to ground. The leg to ground tests would act as a 70vac megger test equivalent.

After pulling back the black wiring cover I see that my stator is actually a 3 wire stator , someone just sautered 2yellow to the main yallow coming from the stator and did the same to the blue/white .. I guess to feed both the regulator and rectifier....

3 phase is always 3 wires.

People also use the stator for a headlamp cutout. Headamp only comes on when charging is sufficient to power a solenoid through a rectifying diode. That may also be a reason.
