Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1978 GS1000 Complete Engine Overhaul With Mods

that's the best way....BUT it doesn't help much when all you want is to thow a leg over it, twist the wick and watch the real estate rip by.

That's it I am upset again.

Or find a cherry 1100E, I did and ride that while your other bike is down.

I might take the S off the road and have it completely painted and frame powder coated.

I am seriously thinking about a second larger bore bike.
I need to ride my kind of ride and the 550 is like scratching
and itch on your back through a jacket with your bare hands.

I need some pull and it is starting to wear on me. I find myself
looking more and more at used 1100 adds and even a few 750's.

Starting to feel desperate.

hmmmmmmm

Might be able to give you a deal on a clean 82 GS1100E with less than 10K
on it.............NOT!!!!

Keep looking around. I found this one right here on the for sale board.
And it was 10 miles away!

Off to the DMV to register it now....

Thx guys I appreciate the words of encouragement.
It is really disappointing to me because in my mind
I just cannot except a 550 as my main ride. It is a
mini bike to me and I really want my 1000 back!

........... =; .....alright, that's enough! The 550 may not have all the power of the 1000 but its still a great bike and better in some respects like fuel, handling and so on. I too have a 550 and 1000 and I looooooove my 550 to death. Be nice to your 550! Its still a tank and is by no means a "mini bike!" Blasphemy!

The difference is that his 550 is not a GS 8O but a Cow a suckie

Hey Mark! Better edit the title of this topic to:
1978 GS1000 Winter, Spring and almost Summer rebuild. :P

Bro, I feel you man, really. I love that little bike so don't get me wrong. I will never get rid of it as it will be a great starter bike for my teens in time. We just got back from a nice ride my son and I on it.

But I can tell that I am differant than you for sure. If I had to keep it as my only ride. It would be gone! I can't really take small bore for too long. It's just how I am. Before this my smallest bike ever was a 650 Turbo. So it made up for it. The 550 does not have what I need when I am "in the mood". I guess I just haven't mellowed yet :)

That's all I am saying.

And Robinjo is right, it's not a GS :)

In the end it will all be worth it. But yeah, I fully support your idea of getting a GS1000 to ride instead of the 550.

We WILL get to ride together sometime this summer one way or another bro.

BTW, I wasn't going to post since no physical progress has been made but since you woke this up. I was at Paparo's last night and we ironed out next Saturday the 22nd to resume engine work. He doesn't have time for engine work right now but is making an exception for me. He is also giving me the dual disk front end off his 1980 GS1000 parts bike at no charge if I remove it and put it on and also provided me diner.

Now how many mechanics are that tight with their loyal customers? A few I am sure, just glad I have him. I'd been lost many a time in the 22 years I have been going to him without his help.

If all goes well I should have the GS back together this summer yet :)

But we are going to finish Brian's bike first. Then my engine. All that is left is, order big bore kit, bore the block, port and polish the head. Rebuild the carbs and put it all back in the bike.

Cosmetics but at this point they can wait.

Rock on..

Hope you guys make tons of progress that day!!!

If I'm not out riding I'll help with the cosmetic stuff if I'm available.. just give a holler!

Thx Amos. It may wait until next winter depending on how late the engine gets done. Riding is more important.

What I am reffering to as cosmetics is having the tank, side cover and tail cowling repainted. Plus the S fairing that is on it's way to me as we speak :)

That's all that is left.
