Finished Cleaning the rust out of the tank today. Cleaned up pretty good, some minor surface rust formed from the ride from my dads garage to home. Stuff sure does come on quick. few pics

There is still rust in there. Keep going...

Got working on the bike again this weekend, haven't been able to work on it cause of a shoulder injury at work. Anyways got the carbs torn down and cleaned with new o-rings. Sorry didn't get many pics.

Got them back on the bike and tried to tune everything, not sure I did the best job at that :( but got the bike back together and fired up easily and took it for a test drive, drives and runs great! But I do have this popping sound when idle and downshifting, can someone tell me what this is from, the bike accelerates without a hesitation and runs super. Could the aftermarket exhaust be causing this or is there more tuning that needs to be done?? Here is a pic as the bike stands at the moment, probably won't get much more done to it now til riding season is over here.

May be a bit rich and dumping a bit of raw fuel into the exhaust..also check for exhaust leaks..sucking in cold air on decelleration will cause the exhaust to po and crackle as well.

Ok thanks for the info, This is my first bike rebuild of any kind and the first carb i've redone. Learning as I go, but the carbs still have me a bit confused and I have no tools to sync with. I just did the manual sync after reassembly and set the idle once the bike was running. I'm still impressed with myself that i rebuilt the carbs and the bike fired up as soon as i hit the button 1st try lol. I'm learning just slowly

AHHH..Just basic bench synced..that adds to then tale!! May be popping from the carbs slighly out of perfect sync as well.. bet some member close to you has guages..ask away is my advise.

I will do that, will also check out the exhaust leaks as well, i remember when i got the exhaust 8 years ago, I had a bit of trouble mounting it, might not be seated right.

Nice job so far.Doing what I did with my 85 750EF?Get it going for the summer then a heavy going over in the winter?Starting to get stuff for my skunk build.Have fun I'll be watching.

well, i'll have to see how money is once riding season is over. My work is not looking good at the moment. But yes I wanted to get it going for summer. Bike has been sitting in the garage for 8 years now, I wanted to ride bad lol.

question, when i rebuilt my carbs.... got the fuel lines that go between each carb and the tubes above them that go between carb 1 and 2 and 3 and 4, is there supposed to be something between carb 2 and 3 or not? if not is there supposed to be something to cap off those holes? I believe they are some kind of air lines?

this area is where i'm talking about, back behind the idle knob

I must say i cannot understand guys like you and Pete. How you can have a bike around that long and not do something about it.I've gone times when I haven't had a bike.I never let one just sit for years though. How do you look at it and not want to get it going? Not really trying to criticize just don't know how you guys do it,I'd sell it before I did that.
Edit:Believe those are the over flows.Had tubes on mine.Just go past the engine.

not the overflows, they are little 3/4" sections of tubes that go between the carbs just like the fuel tees on the bottom between the carbs. And to answer your question yes it drove me nuts not being able to drive my bike for that long. I grew up on motorcycles and have always owned one, but other circumstances kept me from working on it. Jobs are not stable around here. I've gone through 8 jobs in 10 years, i have 4 kids also which keep the money tight and on top of that i've had 2 apartment fires within the last 5 years where I have lost everything.

supposed to be connected with a small rubber hose between them..I typically use a piece of fuel line.

OK you are right, what are they for?Consult manual(courtesy BassCliff) after work.

I believe they are the vent tubes..hooked in sequence leading to the vent nipples. and hooked together they keep road dirt and water from entering the carbs.

ok i wasn't sure, there wasn't one between carb 2 and 3 when i tore them down and the one diagram in my manual doesn't show any there either

Nope your correct.. they connect 1 and 2 to the left vent nipple and 3 and 4 go to the right vent nipple..nothing in between.

ok thanks for the verification, wanted to make sure what i was seeing was correct.

Got the bike insured, inspected and registration! Can finally after 8 years take small rides on it. But some of the little shortcuts I took to get it on the road are starting to show lol. After 3 days of riding it, I blew the fork seals. so i guess i'll be ordering them. Still need to get my carbs synced and tuned properly. Going to be a slow process til it is completely road ready and i am confident to take it on longer trips. As money is really tight at the moment.
