    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1978 GS1000 Spocket side plates?

Hello All,
I am a new member to the GS Resource. I have a 1978 GS1000C that i have restored and i am replacing the chain and sprockets. First off let me apologize if this topic has been covered, i did search but didnt find a clear answer.
I ordered the stock replacements from bike bandit and confirmed based on the schematic online, that i had all spacers/washers.nut required. When i removed the stock front sprocket i noticed the noise dampening plates attached to the sides with 3 screws. The new sprocket doesn't have the holes to attach the side plates, and when i install the new sprocket (with all the correct spacers and washers and nut as per the schematic but without the noise dampening plates) the front sprocket has side to side play on the shaft even when the nut is fully threaded on. Based on previous posts i see others have had these plates, I can't seem to find a replacement sprocket with the holes so i can re-install them, and i am hesitant to just make a spacer to fit as i want to keep it as close to stock as possible. Can anyone help? a link to a website where i can get the sprocket with the 3 holes to attach the side plates would be ideal. Anyone else have this same problem? The new sprocket doesn't take up enough width on the shaft.

Z1 enterprises sell spacers.... I don't know where to get the sprockets with the holes as stock.
 
I purchased a front sprocket from Z1 and the 6mm spacer, I didn't use the spacer as the original plates fit and the screws aligned with the holes in the sprocket. I just needed to try a couple of different alignments and it fit.
I have not done a chain alignment yet but it looked pretty close by using my eyetrometer
I will send a picture when I get back home.

have you purchased an original 630 size chain and sprockets or is it a 530 conversion?
if it is the 530 conversion then the side plates will not fit the new sprocket and you will need a spacer to allow the nut to tighten up correctly
 
Well i certainly appreciate the feedback. It looks like the Suzuki part on Ebay is going to be the way to go. It has the side plates, appears to be the exact replacement, and is a 15T. It is 4x's the cost but to know it is as the factory intended a $60 investment isn't too bad. I am trying to keep the drivetrain as stock as possible. I have the 630 chain brand new which wasnt cheap either so what the hell. Thanks again all!

That is why alot of us have gone to the 530 conversion kits, cheaper, just as strong and lots of choices in chains and sprockets. The stock sprocket just has a damper installed on it, I haven't used one in years and haven't noticed any difference with or with out the damper. I have noticed a difference with the 530 set up, lot less unsprung weight flying around.

Unless you are a judge at a Concours competition, does it really matter?

After all, when riding over about 10 mph, you can't tell what shape the holes are. :-\\\
