A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Thanks much, it's been a good project and I am happy with the results. I really like the red with the white and gold stripes.

Now if I could just get my signals to blink I would be happy. Good grounds, good power, they all light up but won't flash. Took the switch apart and cleaned it, have voltage there. Changed out the flasher and same result. Have 12+ volts at the flasher, 12+ volts out of the flasher.

Put new lamps (12v 23W) in all 4, no change. Have to dig into the wiring print. The left hand switch assembly I have is off an E model so maybe wiring is different?
I think you may be right.with the self cancel the E should have different wiring.

Are your signals properly grounded?

When i got my bike, the signals didn't have separate ground leads off of any of them. However, when I replaced one with a missing cover some time back with one that had a separate ground lead, none of my lights worked. I had to install separate ground leads on all of my signals before anything finally started working.

Might want to give that a shot.

Yea they are grounded good, went back and checked em again. They were working just not flashing.

It is different. The center location wire on the switch is in a different location on the plug so wasn't picking up the flasher.

Re-wired it at the plug and now works great. Took the centering spring out of the switch and now I gots me some of dem dare winkers :D

Wow! Loki great job! I picked up mine on the 14th and I am so excited you made it look easy everything you posted. I believe I have the same bike as you. My frame vin is gs1000-511573 motor vin is gs1000-118126. How do mine compare to yours? Eric (7981gs) frame number is 796 numbers before mine. And his is a 78 gs1000. My registration says mine is a 77.

Wow I have so many question for you and your build. You did an amazing job. Props to you. And in such a short amount of time! good job have fun!

This is what it looked like when it was new.
What you have is a "Skunk" at least that's what we call them here, because of the white stripe in the indent and the black background.
They were great machines in their day, and still great bikes.

Wow that really does look like its it! And he gave me mirrors to go with it. Look like those. So what exactly does that mean I have. Year and model ? Does that make it a 77 78 gs1000 S or E

It's 78 GS1000EC,the last letter(C) is the year code for 78 and in most cases redundant.I don't know how it woks in Cali but might it have been registered late in 77?

This is a '78 GS1000E, the only year the bike was produced with the indents and the first year of production for the GS1000. This one had about 500 miles on it when it was taken.

Thanks for the props, was a good build and the end result is a very quick and great ride. Nice E model you have there, my frame number is 106055 and it's a 78 plain ole early C model.

Any questions you have feel free to ask, be glad to help as it's all fresh in my head.

Just know I spent 420 hours working it to get it to this point, hope that helps in calculations. :D

I would love to share how much I spent $$$ wise, but on purpose I refused to keep track as it did not matter to me. If I had to venture a guess I would say north of 2000 bucks,

Bike running great. If I have 1 complaint it would be the rear end, feels kinda squishy when I take turns smartly. Gonna pop for some new shocks here soon, maybe some Ohlins or YSS piggybacks.

Ya only live once :D

Progressive's or those highly touted Hagon's might save you some coins for gasoline. ;)

Got a pair of the cheapo RFY shocks off ebay. Lower clevis is a throw away, to thin in all the wrong spots, gonna make up some new and try em out. 100 bux, the rest of the shock seems of decent fit and finish.
