Picked up this gs1000 last weekend and im finally getting some time to work on it ...
Air box access hatch/lid is missing !!!
Not at that point yet to choose weather or not I wanna re jet and get pods , so id just like to seal the box up good and tight !!
Searched all my local old bike shop salvage places and with no luck have not been able to find the lid to the air box ...
So until I do find one , cutting a pirce of clear plexi glass and siliconing it in place as a lid temporarly should work ???? No ? Yeah it would be a pian to cut away silicone to gain access to air filter . But this should work ???
If anyone has some suggestions id appreciate it ..
Thanks

Oh one other thing .. because I havent scene the air box lid I dont know if it has holes in it to allow air into air box ??

I think I have an extra one, I'll look today. No holes, the air comes in through two holes down on the lower section, right side by the battery..

Wow, a hundred bucks for that rusty piece of crap? But yeah, that's the correct lid.

I have used a flat piece of cardboard and a wad of foam that the seat holds down temporarily. It worked fine until I got the replacement.

Just love the creativity as displayed on this forum...McGyver would be very proud indeed!!!

Wasn't there a forum member that was making some lids last year? He had made a couple of different prototypes. What ever became of those?

Awsome guys !! Thx for the suggestions ... just drained the oiland installed a new oil filter and topped up with some new oil ... bike sounds very strong , compared to my gs 650 !! Unfortunately theres another small set back .. valve cover gasket is leaking ....I was hoping I could switch over from the 650 to this bike in a couple weeks ,after replacing both tires ....
But with my luck had to do the fork seals , take petcock appart and clean cuzz it was sticking and flooded out the engine .. now a valve gasket ... grrrrr but eh what can I exspect for a bike thats sat for a couple yrs ...
Oh well guess ill keep riding the 650 for the time being !!

And yeah that rusted out cover looks to be the exact one I need !! But for the sake of saving $100 bucks to put towards the tires , I think I have some thin gagedsheet metal to make one up ..

Cheers all and thanks

Yeah, get a gasket, while you wait the valve clearances need to be checked anyway.

Like I said I still have an extra cover somewhere.

Yeah they do need to be checked !! But on the good side I dont hear any valve chatter ...love this bike and cant wait to get out on the street with it !!
Well one more thing done on my list ...oil change !!
New rubber is gunna cost me $400 ... valve gasket $40

$400 bucks seems a little pricey for tires. I think my last set from MC SS was a couple hundred.

Pretty sure I have an extra box with a lid. If I am the closest to you with one, shoot me your address and I will get it to you.

I have the lid, but no box for my GS1000.

Are the boxes really that hard to find?

Not sure I'll need one as I'll be going with a large filter on the manifold or MAYBE 4 pods on the carbs, but I'd still like to have all the stock parts on hand.

I just bought 2 new shinko tires for my gs 650 with tax here in canada it came up to $320.00 then I paid this guy I know who has all the tools and wheel balancer $40 per tire to change them for me ...

Eric..yes they are getting that hard to find. But i have seen them way cheaper on Ebay than the one I picked as an example for the original poster to copy. Just gotta keep lurking and see what comes along.

Im in mississauga ontario .. didnt need the hole box , that I do have just the lid ..

The closest bike salvage place I have to me is called TOcycle and salvage .. the owner there tells me they scrapped a hole bunch of air boxes cuzz everyones going to pods .. says they were taking up to much space !!

Yeah they do need to be checked !! But on the good side I dont hear any valve chatter ...

That's bad news! Don't ride it. There is no valve tapping because there is no valve clearance, they get tighter with wear and too tight will burn them up.

The #1 most common reason for GSes to die an early death!

Tappy valves are happy valves!
